Tomato stems??

Why the hell do restaurants not take the extra 3 seconds to chop these off or leave them out of their foods? Nobody wants to eat a tomato stem. Seriously......get a clue. It pisses me the $%*# off when I find a tomato stem in my salad or burger or whatever.

Am I alone here?

Don't go back to the restaurant then, as if they don't show care & attention to your food there what else are they not taking care off.

+1. Though places that don't take the ends off long beans/string beans irritate me more. It is indicative a lack of attention to detail though, in an eatery, that's seriously problematic.

They buy in bulk and process in bulk. There is probably an FDA guideline as to the amount of stems, bugs, dirt, etc that are allowable in your tomato. They are probably within guidelines to leave it in there.

never mind that the tomato plant is a member of the night shade family.

hehe - moi! Something as minor as a stem? I am always running into things!

Hair
Eyelash
Bug
Staple (in my soup)
Several unidentifiable foreign objects

The best --- couldn't cut my fried pork chops very well and when I flipped them over I saw the "soaker" sheet the meat rests on in the package. Idgits fried it with it on!

From a produce point of view:

When we sell our tomatoes, we leave the stems and vines on for two reasons:

1. Proof of freshness. Vendors can tell by the stem how old the fruit actually is.
2. Nutrients. Tomatoes will continue to drain the nutrients from the stem/vine even after cutting.

Now as for a restaurant keeping them on? I dunno. Could be for number 1?

I'd agree if it were that simple. I've noticed this at nearly every restaurant I've ever been to at one time or another. Even many of the nicer ones.

And no, not a West coast thing, I've noticed this MANY times when I was in FL as well as here in WA.

How soon we forget!!!! This was a HUGE deal this summer....... with HUGE salmonella outbreak.

Tomatos without stems can have salmonella invade the fruit through that injury.

Stem is protection.........

Actually it ended up being mainly Jalapeno and Serrano peppers.

http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/saintpaul/

The investigation showed that jalapeņo peppers were a major source of contamination and that serrano peppers also were a source. In addition, tomatoes were possibly a source, particularly early in the outbreak. Jalapeņo peppers were traced back to distributors in the United States that received produce grown and packed in Mexico. The outbreak strain was isolated from samples of jalapeņo peppers collected in a US warehouse and a patient's home and from samples of serrano peppers and water collected on a farm in Mexico. More detailed information about the outbreak investigation and results may be found in the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

We had to destroy thousands of cases of tomatoes. What a waste.

That's fine up until the point of serving. i'm talking about when they slice it up to put on your burger. I don't think I need to tomato stem on my burger to keep salmonella at bay.

When we were kids, we used to fight over tomato stems. And potato eyes.

I do not eat tomatos. If I think there is something funny in my food, I just keep chewing and try not to look.

My wife lived in France for a while and she always found stuff in her salads and she complained once and the whole restaurant looked at her like she was... a spoiled American. The chef literally said, "it's a salad with food from the ground, what did you expect?"

vine ripes.tomato with stems as noted are still receiving nutrients from the vine and actually have a longer shelf life, as well as flavor.

that has nothing to do with serving the tomato. At that point the stem should be gone.

Stem is protection.........
WTH would I care about stems on the tomatoes prior to serving?

Exactly. Thanks for the sanity. I'm talking about cut tomato slices or chopped up in a salad served on my plate with stem section not cut out.
