Any REAL bowlers on here?

I've bowled at least semi-seriously for the last four years or so. I haven't done it as much lately because I've been concentrating more on my cycling, but I still hit the lanes when I have time.

I wasn't that great, though. When I did it more often, I held an average handicap hovering somewhere in the 160s (not even close to pro status), though my highest handicap is a 246.

I had an average around 180 when I was in college. I rarely bowl now though. Last time I had about 140 average for three games. Not all that special.

Sometimes, I can hit the lanes again at 200 games, but today I finished with a (miscalculated) 150 or so.

I used to roll 170's and 180's but I haven't bowled in years. We were out about once a week, never in leagues, just as friends. My highest was somewhere in the 220 range, if I recall correctly.

No one to bowl with anymore.

I bowled 200 when I was 10 years old. Have since rolled a 207, but nothing higher.

What's it cost to bowl in NY, Mr C?

I've bowled about 6 times in my life. I even got over 100....once.

Now that I've gotten so good on Wiii bowing though, I suspect I'm somewhere in the pro or semi-pro range in real bowling.

Avoid the hip places. Those are bars/clubs with a bowling alley just for side entertainment. I'm talking about the likes of 300, Lucky Strike and Bowlmor. I don't know of any in Manhattan, but in Brooklyn there's Melody Lanes (which isn't that expensive, but has quality lanes, bowling leagues and awesome fries) and Maple Lanes (which has a LOT of lanes, cheap shoes and a great staff).

My school has an underground six-lane bowling alley, which breaks down quite often but works well nonetheless. The carriage return tends to eat up balls, so the team has to use their older equipment to practice with.

I bowl in the work league, have about a 170 average. Good way for the office people and the production people to get together and have a couple nice beverages.

I was going to post some pics from the bowlmor where I grew up but they don't have any on the website (at least they have one), but they call it "vintage bowling" so it has probably run down more than it was 20 years or so ago....

My HS had a rifle range. Probably more useful

Well, here in NYC, the Bowlmor we have is great for those looking to get their drink on more than actually play a good game of bowling.

Now I'm getting fries tomorrow while I bowl two games on my off time. Thanks!

Some buddies convinced me to be on their team a few years ago. They were big drinkers. It was fun for about five times.

Currently averaging 216 on one league and 209 on another.
Shot my second 300 and a 299 this year. High series this year of 795.
But I don't really take it all that serious.
I'll post of pic of the rings when the 299 one comes in.

I really enjoy bowling. Never did it in a league, but that really does look like it would be fun. I think the highest score I ever bowled was a 190 or a 200. But if I got my own ball and bowled regularly I'm sure I'd get better.

I've only broken 200 once in my life. Never really got into it - everyone I bowled with either was not good or way better and therefore I lost interest.

Congrats, man. There are only two people that I know personally that shot multiple 300 games. One of them had a pretty awkward bowling style, but it worked really well for him. I bowled with the other one on a team years ago in high school, but I have no idea what happened to him. He was pretty talented (at least with bowling).

Oh, and there was one guy I went to school with that did it on our school's lanes. Between the breaking down and all, that's an accomplishment right there! :-D

It takes a lot of practice and skill to consistently get 200+ averages, i.e. bowling regularly. I'm not a fan of bowling everyday for the same reasons as I'm not a fan of training everyday; it becomes counterproductive without a rest period. It's more or less like road bike racing, except with a lot less sweat and a lot more weight (on average). The bowlers I know that shot a perfect game had to do practically everything the same exact way every frame, which is a lot harder than it looks (just like everything).

My biggest problem was that I would break most of my strike strings two in. If I could get more than three straight, then I was usually set for a 200+ game.

If you go to any of the lanes in Manhattan, it costs an arm and a leg. If you go to any lanes outside of that, it varies wildly.

Yeah, most bowlers are really big drinkers, hence why people really hesitate calling that a sport.

(Sorry for the thread resurrection. I was looking for another post of mine and found some unanswered questions here.)
