maybe its my job, but nothing surprises me anymore. Not to say that i'm not saddened by the fact that humanity can be so cold, but....if i was walking down the street and people suddenly started turning into ducks and quacking, I don't think i'd bat an eye...maybe just go to the store and by them some bird seed...

cripes.
anybody else read the comments? they make me angry

sure, public service probably treats the homeless different, but I'm appalled they assumed this was a hoax/did not take action sooner. Did they assume the dead guy was homeless? Or did they not consider the homeless who were reporting this to be credible? hmm.

Wow. What a fascinating, yet tragic image.

I make it a point to not read the comments connected to news articles in general. Festering hive and all that.

Sad indeed. You never realize how close we all are from being homeless at any time. It just takes a few unfortunate events.

Ans also...

"Yeah, I seen him," Ruben said.

WUT? I didn't said that.

On many levels, I find this disturbing. The kids playing around it, the lackadaisical response of the police/fire company, the journalist taking what looks to be a close up, the guy the journalist allegedly spoke to that said, "Yeah, he's been down there over a month." That dude had a mother & father, too. Somewhere.

Both

A lot of cities have been criminalizing homelessness. By turning it from something that could happen to anyone into something that is considered a crime and a reflection on the homeless person it erodes empathy. Hence the massive uptick in 'thrill' attacks on the homeless.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/15/us/15homeless.html

I mean, when you have teenagers and adults attacking homeless as some kind of sport, you know we have major problems.

I heard this story yesterday. It even took two 911 calls to get officials to find it.
