real life bad habits computing has given you

What real life bad habits has programming given you?

I've slowly incorporated "lulz" and "lolled" into my vocabulary. They're just so fun to say!

Also, probably bad posture.

bf has made me look for certain emoticons in my messenger services- like the wtf face, or twitchy.

Obscure references (or references at all) that work given a large enough audience online, tend to fail miserably in real life, unless you know the other person knows the subject material as well as you do. Otherwise you sound like a jerk or a moron. Or more so.

A big one for me is that when typing things on a computer, I have time to compose what I say and how I say it, if I desire to. Relying on this has left my mind completely unable to form complete spoken sentences in a timely fashion. It's frustrating.

Yeah, instant messaging is a bit tougher, as well. At least there's a bit of allowable composition time. You can't exactly stand there and stare blankly while you come up with a response in real life, though.

Of course you can, but it's best not to. Socially unacceptable and all.

But maybe that'll change once everyone has grown up on these stupid glowing boxes.

Heh, I've wondered.

At least it's not too weird of a thing to say.

Drunken posting. I am the same person online and in real life (and thus there's little need to explain how I am in real life), except for the drunken posts, which are 100% fabricated. I'll usually have had something to drink before the drunken posts, but they're carefully edited for degraded spelling and grammar. That said, the outrageous content is 100% real.

Being worse about keeping in touch with friends. Since e-mail is a daily job now, I've been less and less inclined to deal with personal e-mails. And so my turnaround time on personal e-mails keeps increasing. When I started my e-mail checking job in 2001, personal e-mails were generally responded to on the spot. Now, they often linger for weeks.

At work I found some crazy picture of a leprechaun (St Patricks Day decoration) and wrote "ceiling leprechaun is watching you masturbate" on it, then hung it up the suspension wires for the ceiling panels (in a place where they were missing). I think only like one person got the joke, the rest had no idea what it was supposed to mean.

My Spanish and Portuguese are 100x better written than spoken for this very reason... especially in Portuguese, my brain is not much faster than my fingers, and is definitely slower than my mouth. Hah.

I try to imitate and when I am listening to people and they say odd or stupid things. I generally only do it when the other person has looked away but I am always imagining the silly little smilies.

Writing legibly is a huge chore for me, except in cyrillic. (If you know cyrillic cursive, you know a lot of the letters can be confused if not written legibly.) I only bother writing legibly in English for tests. I can, however, spell mot word correctly without the need to constantly use spellcheck--I know some people who cannot spell even the simplest word without spellcheck.
