How many pushups can you do?

Plain and simple. How many can you do in a row without stopping?

And by pushup I mean real man pushups, no ground-humping or ass wiggling in the air wimpy sheez, son.

I'm at twenty-seven right now but trying to go higher, following a workout plan over at http://hundredpushups.com.

I do 3 sets of 20 every other day, I'm never particularly strained on the first set when I hit 20, so 40 should be no problem.

But why would I try?

Religiously for the past 20 years I go from bed to floor and do 75 push ups (in a row) every morning.

I have won many $20.00 dollar bills from people who don't believe me.

They really are not that hard to do.

I do 60 pushups in one minute once a year for my military fitness test. I like to think that I store up pushups that I would have done the rest of the year and spend them all at once.

When my oldest was 15 (9 years ago) her boyfriend came in the door and found me just finishing my work out, for whatever reason he challenged me to a push up contest, he gave up at 225, I couldn't do more than 20 as I sit here today, but Im working on it

You need to get some muscles on those arms -- a guy your age should be able to do just almost that many clapping your hands between each one.

I don't do as many as I can anymore. Typically I do 70 at a time, and I'm sure I could do 80. 90 would be painful if I could do it at all. When I was in my 20's, I could do 120.

Learning to do more is easy. Just add about 5 pushups per week until you have trouble. Then add them more slowly. Be sure to do other exercises. Another simple exercise plan that I did in years past -- if you watch TV, do a set of pushups and situps every time a commercial break comes on. You'll get strong fast.

I can do more pushups than I want, and I really don't want to do any. Unless we're talking about the orange sherbert ones found in the ice cream section at the store...*adds to shopping list*

3 sets of 15, 3 times a week. Need to do more, as I have lost a ton of upper body strength.

I do 100 pushups 3x a week - first set of 50 then 2 sets of 25.

I used to be terrible with chin-ups but have worked my way up to 25 non-stop.

Are we talking my dad the marine pushups? Or some new age bs 90 degree elbow or less shenanigans. In scouts, we had to touch our chest to the back of the scoutmaster's hand flat on the ground.

Moi, I'm at 3 x 10, 3 days per week. Best I ever did was 90 (10 wide;10 middle; 10 narrow x 3).

I'm at 2 sets of 30 every day now. I started off at 15 total. I add more as the current sets get too easy.

I'm up to 240 pilates style crunches, as well. 60 crunches in 4 different leg positions. I used to work in a pilates studio...it's fun.

When I was training and teaching martial arts we did insane numbers of and a wide variety of push ups and crunches... I used to do 200-300 crunches a day and at least 100 push ups.

You really have to make sure you do a lot of stretching as you can develop tendinitis in your shoulders and that is really painful.

35 and they are full pushups, straight back, straight neck, nose almost touches the ground. I'm glad you included the proper pushup caveat. I was watching some reality TV show last year and the cops that they were profiling had their annual fitness contest. Both of the winners did the 50 required pushups but neither went all the way down. They were half pushups at best done at a rapid pace. Whoopee. It's better if you do them slow and deliberate in proper form.

I can eek out around 30 good ones. If I try to go beyond that, my form goes to hell.

In high school (ages ago) it was 200, due to the sadistic nature of wrestling coaches. I do 25 a few times a week, just not interested in working up a big count again.

I haven't 'maxed out' in a while with pushups, but little over a year ago I could do about 55 without stopping. I'd hope I could do 70 or so.

I try to do about 4x25 every morning, and every other day, mix in a two sets of inclined (feet on chair) or 'down and hold for 5 counts' every 5 out of 25 ( down, hold for 5 seconds, repeat 5x, then 5 normal, then down, hold for 5, etc). The down and hold for 5 is brutal, and reminds me so well of wall sits, leg lifts, etc from wrestling.

I say try because sometimes I just can't cause I need to get up early for work to get stuff done ASAP or I was out boozin the night before. So I'd say I get a work out in 4-5 times a week. Crunches, lunges, and squats, or stretching break up the sets.

I also use these, and get a little more reach on the down part (and saves my wrists):

25 has always been my lucky number. At times I've worked up to 50 push ups but I've made sure that I was always capable of doing, never fewer than 25 good push ups. That has been ever since grade school days when I was in the Young Marines, Big D detachment. In their 2 week bootcamp, everytime you messed up, you hit the deck and gave the DI 25 push ups. Heh.
