    Must. Get. Dog.

Not right now, of course, but I happened to be scouring our local shelter. They have 6 dogs listed, 4 of which are some sort of pit bull. They are so cute. I got to play with a little sweatheart last night. Jeez, I want one so bad.

I suppose, Must. Get. Job. first, but whatever.

don't make me start blubbering about Tootsie again

I've passed on several dogs in the last nine years, living in this stupid apt. Building. If I had a house with a yard I'd have a hard time not taking home every stray and rescue cat and dog I came across.

love dogs. want a dog. must have dog. travel too much to actually own one.

want to make a difference? listen to jsharr, or even better, donate to a shelter that does it best to not euthanize dogs, or if you really want to make a difference, and help out some heavenly hounds, send me a PM so i can link you to a foundation in thailand that takes care of street dogs.

I hope this trip wasn't an offshoot of the "what would you do with no toilet paper" thread.

If I had money to donate to a shelter, I'd be down there right now, seeing if Val would be a good addition to the family. I do like the idea of volunteering at the shelter, though. If nothing happens with a volunteer position and the bike co-op, I just might have to sign up for the shelter.

What is it? I'm down to $2 in change, but when my student loan comes in, I might be able to part with some of it.

That's what I did. I want another dog, but I can't afford the time and money right now, so I volunteer on the weekends. Petfinder.com is a great site.

I know someone that has a gorgeous lab mix puppy looking for a home. (Ok... it's me)

He's 5 weeks old, eating solid food, adorable and playful yellow lab w/ no tail.

I can't afford a dog right now. I'm also thinking a puppy is just too much for me too deal with anyway. I'd like a dog a bit older...

The last time we where looking for a dog, we wanted a mid-size dog, 50-60 tops. So we went to a shelter that had some coon hound/lab mix puppies, "just to look". Well, we went to where the puppies where and on crawled onto my wife's lap. That was the end of just looking. Copper is now 110 lbs, so much for mid size. So stay away from the shelters until your ready.

+1. It really makes a difference, you'll meet cool people, you get to work with dogs, and you'll learn a lot.

Owning a dog is more expensive and a heavier commitment than most people realize. Aside from obvious bills resulting from food, vets, etc, it can be really tough if you're in a position where you have to leave the dog alone for long periods of time.

+1 on donations and volunteer time. Those will all be 'your' puppies and kittens, in a sense.

here is one of my favorites, out on Long Island. They even have a Bike Ride every summer to raise money.

And a local shelter for you folks nearby; time is running out for cats that need adoption by March 1st; if you are in NYC or nearby areas, please consider giving one of these little sweeties some love.

Val is gorgeous. Try getting the numbers of some host families that adopt pets, provide shelter but try to adopt them out. (Most cities have dozens) In Val's case, she already has a home as soon as you are ready.

We'll help you with all the adoption fees, etc. It will be like Val is being loved by a surrogate family until you are ready.

Please raise her as a conservative, however.

    She's gorgeous,

    Airwick

For those who want to volunteer with the shelter but "just can't" because of emotional issues*, please consider volunteering with a rescue group. Many of these groups need foster homes for their dogs; if you can't do that, they also usually need people to take foster dogs to the vet or to show them at adoption events. It's VERY rewarding knowing that you can make a difference in the lives of these dogs, and every dog adopted from one of these groups usually means one less dog in a shelter.

    * i.e. knowing that so many of them will be euthanized. And don't get me wrong--I'm one of these people. I cry just watching the Sarah McLaughlin ASPCA commercial, so instead I help out with a local rescue group.

    incorrect.

they can be exceptionally cute, although some do indeed resemble a four legged variation of a great white shark.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I totally dig pittie or bully breeds now, since I think they are cute. In a few more weeks I would have been volunteering at my local shelter for a year. Before I started volunteering I had always thought my all time favourite breed would be either Golden Retrievers or a Lab. Turns out there were a lot of misconceptions, Goldens and Labs can be smart but there are some that are dumb as bricks as well.

All the pitties and bullies that I have had the chance to work with are under the impression that they are lap dogs, in the literal sense. Given the chance they will climb into your lap and try to cover your face in slobber. It doesn't matter if they are a puppy or not. Be it a little 40lb girl to some 80+ lb meat head. Also some of the smartest dogs that I have met at the shelter were bullies. One brindle boy knew how to open doors with push bars, no one taught him how, he just watched us (humans) and figured it out.
