Dominican Republic or Kauai, HI

OK--planning a vacation. On the plus side of the Dominican Republic
is the cheap cost, interesting culture, and the great windsurfing.
Downside is risk for malaria, dengue fever, typhoid and Montezuma's
revenge. Oh and Hep A +B.

Kauai-upside is incredibly diverse ecosystem which includes rainforest,
great snorkeling and surfing, etc. Downside is that it is more expensive
and less exotic, more turistas and gringos.

you should add in the cost of vaccination shots to your Dr. D.R. trip.

What time of year are you going? D.R. also has risks of hurricanes blowing through.

So does HI....
Having been to both, I would choose HI. DR is really not that great in my book. HI is (was? this was 30 yrs ago) absolutely beautiful.

D.R. Gets hurricane about every 3 years - I think they got hit by 3 last year. Hawaii, about every 30.

Lived in Hawaii for 2-1/2 years, and Kauai is indeed beautiful. Would definitely be my choice if I had the funds.

March - safe from hurricanes. Not peak tourist season either place, so the crowds of camera-bearing tourists spilling out of Roberts Tour buses at every scenic point along the Waimea Canyon drive shouldn't be quite so overwhelming.

True...but it only takes one to ruin a perfectly good vacation. So, OP needs to be aware its a possibility.

I just went to Kauai last September. If you're looking to simply relax and lounge around on the beach, it's great. Green all over and not too many touristy attractions like O'ahu. Don't bother bring a bicycle either. The main highway is scary narrow for cycling...

Kauai. I've been twice and stayed south in Poipu both times. Nice beaches and you can swim with the turtles. Also, Lappert's ice cream is fabulous.

So far as I know, the only way that you can get malaria or any of the crazy diseases from going to DR is by visiting the dirt poor areas (for which, like any developing nation, there are plenty). The more commercial areas are also very touristy, and as far as I know, the safest areas. My Dad owns a small business over there and goes just about every year, coming back clean every time. (Not to mention that some of our family down there live in said areas.)

Hawaii is a tourist haven, but it'll probably be more enjoyable if safety is a major concern. There are more areas of interest to visit as well.

Have fun!

Safety isn't a huge concern. Dengue however is endemic in the Caribbean basin--
and unlike a lot of diseases is just as prevalent in the urbanized areas as elsewhere.
Still--low probability.

Kauai isn't nearly as "touristy" as Oahu, Maui or Kona. It's actually very rural. And Kauai has the most beautiful beaches in the Hawaiian island chain. Also, if you're worried about too many tourists, you won't have a problem right now because hotel occupancy rates statewide are at extremely low levels.

I can't speak about the Dominican Republic because I've never been there, but I've really enjoyed the vacations I've taken on Kauai.

hehe - I used to have a big crowd of Dominicans come into my downtown bar.

And they pronounced themselves as Do-min-EE-cans who drank Hin-EE-kens.
