Generosity of spirit or calculated image reconstruction? You be the judge.

We've all made mistakes.

Sure the negativity never looks good. But there are worse things.

- Like child molestation (no names mentioned), shooting your wife (no names mentioned), stabbing your wife and her friend (no names mentioned), animal cruelty and running a dog fighting ring (no names mentioned), or smacking your girl around and not showing up to perform (no names mentioned).

His was small compared to the ugliness that was put onto others in the above examples.

He ought to be pretty thankful to A-Rod for knocking his story off the front page so quickly.

Who cares why he did it, he made a kid with cancer happy for a day, that's all that matters.

I see what you are saying and agree that it could have been worse. But when you've had a record breaking performance in the Olympics, why do anything to give the press a reason to question your accomplishments? It was a jackass move.

But what was his mistake? Surely it wasn't smoking pot, was it? Almost all of us have at some point. Some of us still do and judging by the success of some that partake, marijuana is not that bad for you. Marijuana is mainstream. I can go home tonight and turn on That 70s Show and the kids will be getting high and we'll all laugh about it. Go to the video store and look at all of the movies that have marijuana in the story. So what was his mistake? Smoking in front of a camera? Choosing friends who would sell a photo like that?

What reason would they have to question his accomplishments? Pot is only a performance enhancing drug if you're a snowboarder or a bass player.

The whole pot and Michael Phelps thing seems pretty silly compared to the truly horrible stuff humans seem to enjoy doing to another human (and dogs and cats).

The gov't is missing a whale load of tax revenue not legalising marihuana and treating it like alcohol. I can't think of the last time I heard of someone smoking pot and doing something damaging. Most people I know crave snacks and want to snuggle after a dose of marihuana.

You know, I'm not really sure what the deal is. Mr. Phelps, from what I've read about him, seems like a genuinely nice person that can swim really well and likes partying it up. With all of the success he's had, there's no reason why he shouldn't.

It's one thing to smoke marijuana (socially anyway) after winning eight goal medals, but it's another thing to lie about using PEDs and then give the stupidest response ever about their existence after setting tons of records and being the hero of several young baseball players worldwide...

Indeed. All that money and fame is great, but i can't imagine the stress that puts on a 23 year old shoulder. And when you compare his "mis-actions" to many of the other young athletes in this country, i think he's fine.

The DUI was an issue. It bothers the hell out of me when these wealthy athletes can't hire a driver for the night. But at least he's not involved in shootings at strip clubs that result in the paralyzation of an innocent bystander (ala "Pacman" Adam Jones), or wrecking his car on the Kennedy and fleeing the scene (ala Lance Brigs) or picking fights with fans (ala Ron Artest)...i could go on.

I posted a few times in the other thread but no no avail, people keep making it a moral issue.

Michael Phelps is a highly successful swimmer, Michael now need to be a highly successful businessman.

Michael Phelps does not get paid millions of dollars swimming, he gets paid millions of dollars peddling other companies products.

But having said that I do admire him for his swimming accomplishments and the time he does put back to the community like the article states. Michael wants to buy the swim facility he trains out here in Baltimore. And one of his purposes is to help the local youth. I just hope he doesn't blow it by keeping doing the stuff he's doing. He could really do great stuff out of the pool.

Bill
