My sister is a little freaked out - She came in thru Buffalo Wednesday night and is due to leave Sunday - although the weather will be better than last night's high wind, rain to snow mixture.

It's been super windy here since yesterday, did that have anything to do with it?

Sorry to hear about your dad. I may be losing mine due to cancer. We'll know more next week after his VA visit.

About 10 years ago we lived within two blocks of the crash. We are trying to remember, but I do believe we visited the people who lived in the house that was hit. Clarence Center is a very pretty little village, and very quiet. I can't imagine what the people are going through right now.

The initial thought is the wings iced up that caused a stall. It was only at 2300 feet so there wasn't enough time for it to recover.

If it was ice, it must have picked up an igloo's worth. The Dash is a bit of a workhorse. If it had some intake or turbine ice issues, that's another story.

My pet theory (which probably has nothing to do with reality) is that they lost an engine, yawed, and slowed enough to stall it, thus causing a spin. There's also tail icing...

Last year I was a passenger in one from Tallinn to Prague and the props were throwing ice into the fuselage.

just to tell you, it's a DASH-8, these are turboprop commuter airplanes.
same DASH-8 which had the landing gear issue. Although it seems unrelated to this crash.

Riding your road bicycle on the street is so much safer than flying.

First fatal crash of an American commercial major passenger airliner in 2.5 years. This was a Dash-8, the ubiquitous workhorse twin turboprop commuter plane used worldwide. There are still about 200 of them in service for dozens of airlines around the world. I heard a media report that in 25+ years of heavy service, there has NEVER been a previous fatal incident with a Dash-8, and only one other fatal crash in the entire world since the early 80's when the plane was introduced. If that's true, that's a rather amazing safety record.

The really disturbing part about this crash is that these planes fly into similar icing conditions globally on a daily basis and this NEVER happens to this aircraft. Something must have been amiss with those de-icing boots. Because if that Dash-8 went down like that, so could your next passenger plane flying into NY, Detroit or wherever. That is some very spooky aviation juju right there boys.
