again...

Came through with another round of layoffs again. We have a meeting in about an hour that I am hoping will address what is going on. Frankly, if the company has gone belly-up, it would be nice if they would stop tip-toeing around it. Its also possible they have a new vision...

Saturday I re-sign my lease. Was already planning on moving to a smaller apt to save some cash "just in case", but now I am wondering if I should wait out the last 2 mos, and find something last-minute if I am still employed? Otherwise, I was thinking a month-to month option (but that is spendy!)

Part of my heart wants to throw in the towel out here, pack it back up for MN when my lease is up (end of April).

I'll do the towel throwing around here.

You hope for the best, OK?

thanks! yeah, I am. Frankly, I have the cash to get by a few months of unemployment. Like everyone else, I'd rather not have to. ATM, I'm just trying to strategize how to take the smallest hit to the pocket, so I can stay on track with things I'm working quite hard for.

From what you said the last time, I certainly don't think you jumped in with a great company. The manager sounded like an ass clown the way he handled the lay offs.

It might be good to start looking for what may be available in MN now and let the help determine. It's no good going back if you have no job there either.

Make sure you don't leave voluntarily if you have have some sort of contract regarding the relocation package. I know I couldn't leave the company for 1 year when I got the relo package to this berg.

No, there is no contract, and CO does not require severance pay. I anticipate I'd get 2-weeks if anything.

I am not sure who "the manager" is, I suspect a board of unknowns (unknown to me). Either way, it was a startup, I knew I was taking a chance, just still surprised its happening so quick.

The advantage of moving back to MN is mom's basement, and saving a crapton of money job hunting there as opposed to here. Plus, I have more connections there.

I was referring to that guy you said came out and said "the rest of you are safe.....for this week".

oh... his last day was yesterday. I was sad to see him go too, as he had a real passion for the institution. I suspect those cuts were also at the direction of who I now refer to as the "seven dwarves" (vanilla sky reference, if anyone is a fan)

Survey the employment landscape where you are and consider jumping ship if you get a better or more stable offer.

yes.
but the problem is, I am highly overpaid. I have been saving it and living like I'm not... but it affords me the luxury to visit the family and BF in MN. I am 85% sure I will not find a very close match.

Mostly, a web designer. I'm pretty happy with it- have been thinking for years if I pursued a master's, what would it be in? Not sure, and I'm pretty cool with what I'm doing.

Damn, artifice, sorry you're getting jerked around like this. I can't imagine the stress you're going through.

In any case, it sounds like the company is pretty unstable, and you should probably at least start sending out feelers for something else, even if you make it through the next round.

I'll be hoping for the best, and keeping my fingers crossed, typing skills be damned!

Ugh, my best friend was laid off yesterday, because his employer is doing what most employers are doing right now, instead of taking a relatively small net loss, he is letting his employees go and redistributing the workload, which amounts to putting profits before people.

Yep....I'm seeing that everywhere. Doesn't it just piss you off? Companies can't stand a 1% loss over keeping employees.

I'm waiting for it to hit here. They keep saying they're doing everything they can to keep from laying off and have so far, but I'm afraid it will have to come eventually.

Don't forget that the CEO then gets a big ol' bonus for the company's "return to profitability."

Short-sightedness! Short-sightedness! Ra ra ra!

Who you talkin' to?

Right now I'm a full-time Sociali...er, student, and I work in a relatively recession-proof part of the economy, auto mech, (it slows down but not enough to lay folks off, even people who live in cars need them to run,) so I haven't really felt it much, but I sure can see it around me.

People everywhere are taking a beating because of the economy. One would think that this would create more compassion instead of more greed.
