Well, depends on the place and as far as I can see the US is generally not that place.

However, in the beginning it is best to wait for others ordering something and then following suit. That is, drink along to avoid being typified as a buzz killer or whatever but be sure to stay well within safe limits.

Of course, when your boss offers you a beer, you don't say no....drink slowly if you have to.
