Should I flush the toilet?

This is in my dorm, not my home. There are two showers on my floor of the dorm, one in each bathroom. If anybody on the floor flushes the toilet, the person in the shower gets burned by very hot water. I don't feel any shame if I flush the toilet and someone in the other shower gets burned because I would have no way of knowing if they were in the shower. But what if there's a person showering in my bathroom? If I flush that toilet, they are going to be burnt -- I will knowingly and willingly burn them. It's considered proper etiquette to flush the toilet after each use though. What should I do? Is their pain simply a sacrifice to be made to preserve a tradition that society values, or should I refrain from flushing and let them shower in comfort?

If they can hear you, just yell "FLUSHING!"

They'll catch on plenty quick.

I take it you're on the can writing this ...

Bad plumbing....get a petition going to the school to fix this problem.

"If it's yellow, let it mellow;
if it's brown, flush it down"

...a philosphy which I personally abhor, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to quote some poetry.

invasionusa 03-02-09 11:31 AM

yes, burn them.

WJ13US 03-02-09 11:41 AM

If it's yellow let it stay. If it's brown flush it away.

RazorWind 03-02-09 11:45 AM

Yes, but yell "FIRE IN THE HOLE!!" first.

LOL....almost posted that the first time.

I heard its from a NYC ad slogan back in the 70s or 80s one year when there was a drought and they were trying to conserve water.

I think a warning before flushing would be appropriate. Not unless you think it's funny to listen to someone scream in the shower. In that case don't say anything.

ilikebikes 03-02-09 11:51 AM

When your done you can ask them if they want you to flush now? or would they like to flush when they're done? :thumb:

I guess I should have mentioned another factor: nobody in this hall talks to each other. I have only spoken with my roommate (who is also a very good friend of mine) and briefly with one other person out of the remaining 5 who live here.

KingTermite 03-02-09 12:11 PM

The problem is living in a dorm. You need get a roomate (maybe current one) and get an apartment close to, but off campus.

CliftonGK1 03-02-09 12:12 PM

The polite thing would be to pull the fire alarm, so the guy gets out of the shower. Then you can flush the crapper w/o scalding him.

efrobert 03-02-09 12:12 PM

That's why I just poop in the shower!

Michigander 03-02-09 12:36 PM

What kind of toilets are these? It should be very easy to shut them off and flush them with a bucket of water or something.

You're better with mechanical stuff than I am, so I'm sure you can figure an easy fix out. :thumb:

Velo Vol 03-02-09 01:18 PM

When I lived in a dorm it was custom to yell out "shower!" immediately before flushing.

Booger1 03-02-09 03:34 PM

You could have them turn the heat of the water down so you don't burn them.

It's a dog eat dog world. Remember when you got burned when some a-hole flushed during your shower?

Then it's easy:

PC2: John [roommate's name], is that you?

Shower: No.

PC2: (flush)

Right era, possibly wrong coast. I remember it from when I lived in Los Angeles in the 70s and 80s.
