Problems Installing Ubuntu

Not having very good luck here. I don't know why this isn't working.

I have my liveCD, trying to install Ubuntu 8.10. I've tried the guided partitioning and manual partitioning, but neither seems to work. During the installation, the computer will either restart itself, or simply load the liveCD again.

The furthest I've gotten it to go is here...

at which point it froze and I had to restart the computer.

I try booting from the harddrive, and it just sits at this screen here...

Any ideas what could be causing the problem, other than the fact that my computer is a P.O.S.?

Ubuntu does have some issues with video and certain cards. What version are you installing of Ubuntu? EDIT: Oh, I should have read closer: 8.10! Look at the Purdue Linux Users group, you might find what you're looking for there. http://groups.google.com/group/PurdueLUG?hl=en

By the way, my netbook runs Xandros, which is also a Debian variant (I'd thought it was Red hat, but I was wrong).

If you want the most trouble-free way to install Ubuntu, forget about the LiveCD and download/burn the alternate installation disk instead. After you've done that, if it hangs before you get anywhere, use the options on the start screen to add the boot parameter fb=false. This means it won't use the framebuffer, which is what can be a problem on many laptops, for example.

Well, that didn't last long. After installing a few updates, I restarted the computer, and got this message

Boot from (hd0,0) ext3 32ba2876-5976-47e1-861b-f41d8fc3e142
Starting up ...
[0.820136] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

looks like I'll need to reinstall...

Yo, There's this thing called Windows. I hear it's really easy to install, supports tons of hardware and runs the most games and software. You might wanna check it out.
