On the way to job interview.

This will be my first job interview since I was laid off about 3 weeks ago and after about a dozen job contacts. Wish me luck.

Inteview went well. I find out tomorrow after they get the results of the back ground check back. I have never committed a felony in my life but these still make me nervous. Especially the credit check part of it. I don't understand what business it is of a potential employer of what my credit is.

A client of mine (my company anyway) does security checks on all their consultants before they get a pass to enter their facility, part of the security check requires a credit check. I refused to let them do the credit check on me, it took a good long meeting before i got clearance, but i still wouldnt give in to them doing a credit check on me though.

If you are applying for a finance or accounting position, the company might be curious to see if you have tens of thousands of dollars in credit debt, or if you can't pay your bills on time. They probably apply the credit check to all newbies just as a formality.

Refusing the credit check would mean they will not hire me at all. Giving them permission at least gives me a chance. What kind of info. can they obtain through this kind of a check?

Yeah, trust me, they wont think twice before saying no and letting someone who will step up. Generally when it has to do with checks and in this economy, employers don't have time for silly stuff like "oh noez I'm special, I don't want that check!".

I was offered and accepted the job this morning. I start next Tuesday. The thing is after taxes it is about the same as my unemployment benefit. The only advantage is it is longer then unemployment will pay me. Better then nothing in this current, really tough to find a job job market right now.

Congrats. And unemployment does not give you the chance to prove yourself and grow with the company, recieve pay raises, etc.

Yippee - good job!

I was told the business about a credit check was that good people, people who led a decent life, etc did the right things. And one of the right things was to pay your bills and to not have skipped out on old loans, have creditors after etc etc.

Thank goodness my job did not require one ...

And you're not being a leach on society because you're too lazy to work for that paycheck.

In Iowa people used to get away with being a leach on society. Iowa wisened up to this fact and now for those that are on unemployment benefits Iowa Workforce Development, IWD, requires at least 2 job contacts a week, a weekly filing for the unemployment benefits, if a person is offered a job they are not supposed to refuse it with out good reason, a person has to be serious about working at the companies they apply at, people are required to prove to IWD that they have made their contacts. They are often asked by IWD to show their log of contacts and will follow up to prove whether or not they actually applied with the companies. Unemployment benefits is only a percentage of what you made at a previous job, not neccessarily your last job though and the benefits only last for 26 weeks.

One thing about credit inquiries: Too many of them actually lower your credit score.

I never knew this, wow. So when I graduate from college and look for employment in the finance sector, my credit will be lowered because employer's inquiries? My already low credit will be lowered .

Apparently job based inquiries don't affect that.
