Ya id it! Ya caught the Tater! You can take down those roadblocks now!

Soooooo, I'm on my way home from a DR's appointment yesterday, and decide to stop in the Stamford mall to walk around a bit. I've been sick for almost a month and haven't really gotten out, so off I go and happen to have my camera with me. I thought " wow, great opportunity for some great street photography." Apparently the mall cops didn't think so, they must have called in an 879er code red or something, cause all of a sudden, agent smith style, they start coming out of every crevice of the mall at light speed! I swear..I thought i heard blackhaws coming in..I was waiting for Jon Wayne to come riding in on a horse with the sundance kid in tow. They're screaming at me " SIR, SIR!" i'm like " WHAT! I"M NOT DEAF!" ..." you can't shoot here!".." ok, why not?"...." You can't, thats the rules."...So I start making my way down to the level my truck is on. Oh looky! more of them!..... " Do you have a permit?" ...." didn't know I need one."..." you do"...." Craptacular, i'm on my way out anyway"....and to finish it off, I was ESCORTED out of the mall....what would we do with out these brave souls to protect us?......

You mess with Paul Blart and you are going to get slapped. I guarantee you it will leave a slightly red mark for up to 5 minutes.

huh - I've never had a problem. I was "flashbulb Freddy" when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto for Christmas a couple years ago too. Only time I had a problem was taking a pic of some art pieces and jewelry at a very nice craft show and the owner put her hand over my lens. I asked the artists after that (and basically had no problem).

Clearly canadian malls are not a target for terrorist photography Tude.
American malls clearly are, as they have been attacked numerous times.

The funny thing is..i work in stamford, and go into the mall for ems runs, sometimes the cops come too if it's a fight or something..us and the cops always laugh at these guys cause they are so useless. They want to be cops so bad...but never make it. And they always walk like they are...In all fainess...one guy was nice and humble, he's the only one i would communicate with.

I was a mall cop once, never heard of a policy of no cameras.
I don't think most of the people I've worked with would even notice that in the "rule" book.

what mall is that?

The stamford mall in CT. It was in a movie or two....specifically " scenes from the mall". They use terrorism as an excuse to prohibit photography of any missteps of mall employees..it's crap

Interesting site.

I found the mall my brother used to work at before I moved to CO...about 20 years ago. I remember it due to the goofy name, "Cinderella City". Apparently this guy remembers it and even wrote a song about it.

You should check out A Downloadable Flyer Explaining Your Rights When Stopped or Confronted for Photography.

From the flyer:

Quote:
Property owners may legally prohibit photography on their premises but have no right to prohibit others from photographing their property from other locations.
Quote:
They Have No Right to Confiscate Your Film
Sometimes agents acting for entities such as owners of industrial plants and shopping malls may ask you to hand over your film. Absent a court order, private parties have no right to confiscate your film. Taking your film directly or indirectly by threatening to use force or call a law enforcement agency can constitute criminal offenses such as theft and coercion. It can likewise constitute a civil tort such as conversion. Law enforcement officers may have the authority to seize film when making an arrest but otherwise must obtain a court order.

Of course, IANAL, YMMV, blah blah blah.

I'm aware of this....They must know this too because i was waiting for them to try it..but they didn't. The mall is privately owned, so me being in there and photographing is technically against the rules...its just a BS rule...

That mall is identical to the Columbus downtown City Center mall that is scheduled for demo and become a park.
