In Honor of George

Almost two years ago now, but worth knowing if you missed it.

God speed George, and thank you.

"A feisty Jack Russell terrier has given his life to save five children from a mauling by two savage pit bulls.

The tiny dog leapt to the defence of the children - aged between four and 11 - when the two dogs threatened them on the way to a dairy in Manaia, New Zealand, on Sunday."

I've heard about George on a Jack Russell Forum. Very tragic and heroic story.

I missed the original story. We are very lucky to have our jack russell terriers.

What a dog. Just wow. (Or bow-wow, as the case may be, but seriously, his story is simply inspiring.)

whenever I think about the stuff that makes a grown man cry, few things are more potent than this sort of story.

I work down the street from an Institution for the blind where they train seeing eye dogs. Few things are more noble to behold than man's best friend doing their thing.

Now we're talking.
Wonderul folks like pgoat and MTBLover knowing your story go a long way in honoring George.

Speaking of honoring George, I'd like to mention my own George who was a great dog.

(written 1/5/2006)

George "Clay" Raines went to doggy heaven on January 3rd, 2006. Although not an active participant on our bicycle tours, George was an important part of Team Russell and loved member of our family.

George made it easier to leave our house for weeks at a time knowing that he was home to protect and watch over our property. It was always a highlight, returning after a tour, to see my beautiful, filthy, loyal George smiling and waiting for us in the backyard. I only hope George knew how much he was loved and understands how much his life meant to me. - Hank

George was adopted as a puppy in 1995 when he was found in the road after being hit by an automobile. The Doctors that evening had given the young lab/chow mix a less than 5% chance to live until the morning. George survived and became the only other male in our house of five females until Airwick was adopted in 2004.

George is survived by his sisters, Agape and Arizona, of the home and by Hank and Airwick who were given the news while touring in Arizona.

We know that George will find a nice mansion to live under and call his own but he will certainly be missed. Returning home from Arizona, like all future tours, will be bittersweet without our George.

George

"You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us." --Robert Louis Stevenson

It's amazing how people who just DON'T understand have the attitude: "It's just a dog".

There are soooo many people in this world who have less love, less compassion and less loyalty than our pets do.

Thank you for sharing that with us, Airwick. I did not hear about this before today.

The Georges of the world help us cope with both.

LEO

In Melbourne Australia October 2008 , a family house fire threatened the occupants who all fled the blaze . Once outside in safety , it was realised that Leo , the family pet and Jack Russell Terrier was missing and despite calls, he refused to leave the burning home .

When firefighters entered the house, they discovered Leo next to and guarding a box containing several very young kittens . Leo had lost consciousness and stopped breathing . However , he was revived and survived as did all the kittens . Leo became a national hero .

Thank you, Cbad. I'm searching for a good photo of the statue of George but no success, yet.
