    A question about credit

I came to Florida on 2005 for a few weeks to check out the place. I wasn't planning on staying but I found a good deal on an apartment and I stayed. That was not the original plan, therefore I never cut off the services on my old residence. I called my Mom to let her know I was going to stay here (she was my neighbor @ my old residence) and she said she could take care of cutting off all services.

But Mom forgot (maybe she didn't even knew) about cable TV. That one kept coming for 3 months till they cut it off for not being paid. It totaled $260 bucks.

I check my credit report regularly and it was clean. But it seems that at some point the cable company reported this unpaid debt and now on March 2009 I checked my report and that $260 bucks stain is there.

I'm not saying is anybody's fault, this is all on me, I'm not whining. I just want to know what to do from here. I'm thinking I could (in this order):

    1) Call the cable company and explain what happened.
    2) Ask them to send me a bill.
    3) Pay the bill.
    4) Ask them to take this off my credit report.

But will they take it off my credit report once I pay it? Are they gonna leave it there? Or maybe update it to "yeah he paid... 4 YEARS LATER THO..."

The other option is just to wait a few years till it goes away.

    What should I do?

Do the right thing and explain the situation, then pay the bill. If it doesn't come off your credit, then contact the credit agencies and let them know that the bill has been paid. They'll investigate, and once confirmed, will remove it.

Some sort of pithy irrelevant one-liner should go here.

Doesn't hurt to dispute it either, if explaining it doesn't help out. If that doesn't work, by law, you can leave your own comment in the bad record entry.

No, they won't remove it, just change it to paid... 3 months (or more late). It'll still be a stain on the report.

But, if you call the cable company and explain what happened, pay the bill and ask them to remove it, you have a good chance that they will.

Did it go to collections? Collection agencies buy debt at discounted prices and try to recover the full amount. They're a bunch of lying bastids; one of the lowest forms of scum around.

If you can deal with the original company, it'll be a lot better. Explain it, tell them you'll pay it off and ask them to take it off your record. If I was dealing with a collection agency, I'd get all that in writing before sending them a time. After all, the damage on your record is already there and tossing perfectly good money away to have nothing changed will just be a waste. So basically the value to of that $260 to you is to have that mark removed. Otherwise, just don't pay it.

OK, I called the company (original company, not collection agency) and explained what happened. They wanted me to pay over the phone with credit card or electronic check but I asked them to send me the bill to my new address (to have it on writing, with a paper trail). They agreed to send me a bill and take it off the record after I pay the debt in full. Let's see how it goes...

    Thanks guys.
