I don't get it.

Do guys like a feisty woman? Find them to be a challenge?

There's a manager from another location of ours that I met a few times who I understand has been really hard on his employees, although I myself have never worked with him. We are talking about suspensions and terminations that eventually were reversed. When shopping earlier today, I saw him at the store (I turned my head to avoid him) and pretty much tried to continue shopping when he approached me and said hello to me in a very enthusiastic way. At that point I had to greet him back, for I didn't want to *ahem* be rude. Anyway, he asked me how I'm doing and after my reply I commented that he looked stressed. He said it wasn't stress, just that he's a mean person and that's the way his face is. I told him "Oh I heard".

For some reason he seemed to want to continue chatting so it came down to work numbers and treatment of employees. I did not hold back my opinions of what I saw, me being a union rep for my location. I was very straight forward and gave him the view from the employee's side.

Anyway, after a half hour of that type of discussion, he began to talk to me in a personal way....talking about where he came from, his family (even down to where grandma was from) and what mix of race he is. After a while he looked at my basket (which contained ingredients for dinner) and hinted to me that he will be having top ramen tonight. And he smiled at me. I just rolled my eyes at him and said I had to go start cooking.

For someone who is as hard assed as he is to his employees he sure opened up. I don't get it. Why open up to someone who pretty much just told you off??

Because there are many men that soften up when meeting a woman for the first time. These are the women that eventually subjugate to relationships with "***holes" that deteriorate very rapidly.

Well you are a very good looking woman, maybe he was thinking you might want to get to know him in a less professional way.

Lonely...nothing more. Mean people, especially managers have NOBODY who wants to talk to them. You just got 'stuck'. Do a better job avoiding him in the future.

agree with Ka Jun.

That said, often someone's work personality has nothing to do with who someone is outside of
work.
There was this one manager in South Africa who I would argue with in meetings. basically we
both would state the other either 1) didn't know what they were talking about, or 2) were an idiot and
full of it, or Both. Other employees used to cringe when we would get into it, however 5 minutes after the meeting he would be inviting me over for a braai or drinks at the pub etc. we really were good friends, just not so much at work.

maybe you hurt his feelings by giving it to him straight, and he wanted to return the favor so he could regain his status as "alpha"? or he's lonely.

My feisty woman wouldn't be down w/ that.

That's where the "challenge" part comes in.

Challenge is sanitized speak for what is colloquially termed a "getting a smackdown".

I've met him on several occasions and because of the way he's treated people, I have always tried to avoid him. As a matter of fact, he showed up at my work one day and tried to get me to attend a diversity meeting with the subject of "women in management". I rejected his offer but somehow my name was still on the list of attendees. I didn't show up.

That was taken the wrong way, but not a big deal.

Either way, anyone trying to make a date using that approach is bound to fail (in most cases).

I got it

the proof is rarely presented but has been sufficient (for proof purposes, anyway...wouldn't say no to some more samples).

True, it normally fails.

It just takes so little effort that a lot of guys will just throw it out there, hoping it might work this time.

people who are aholes to fellow workers are generally numbnuts who have little or no interpersonal skills and cannot read people's hints, nuances or signals. the logic in his mind is: she chatted with me outside work = i don't repel her = she must secretly like me. sounds like fertile ground for obsession. be afraid.

and you took the encounter beyond a passing greeting and initiated the chat beyond a "good to see you" by asking about his stress. = oh she is interested in me
