    Good invention or not

    The Scanner-Shredder.

I have a bunch of paper doc's I want to convert an electronic form, then I want to destroy the paper copy, no big deal. But it would be easier if I just loaded all my docs into one tray, they get scanner and storied on a network drive, then the docs get shredded.

Someone on halfbakery.com had the same idea, but it doesn't seem anyone has developed this product.

It seems like a good idea, does it not?

Let me get this straight. You are digitizing your documents. You want to be safe. You know how people are constantly going through your garbage. You have such confidence in the scanning/storage process, that you want to destroy the original before you even have a chance to verify the file.

    No.
    Just, no.
BTW, Hos, since you've been logged into BikeForums, I took the opportunity to hack into your computer and peruse your vacation photos. I also made some corrections to your tax return.

    You're welcome.
Oh yeah, and nice swimming trunks.

I know there are some short comings to the idea, and when to use it. It isn't so much about keeping them safe, it is more about wanting to put my doc's in a database so I can search for them later.

Thanks for fixing my tax return, I'll be sure to shred it.

Sometimes it makes sense to put two things together, but scanning and shredding are two completely separate things. Other than 'in a few circumstances' one does them in quick succession, they don't typically happen together. I don't see how it makes sense to combine them.

Two completely different machines together means if one breaks, you lose the other as well if you want to replace. Better to just keep them as two separate machines and not have to worry about the document being shredded before its scan is validated as Metzinger pointed out.

It would be like combining a toaster with a refrigerator. In a few instances you use a toaster right after using the refrigerator, like pulling butter and bread out to make toast, but its not like every usage is for that. But now if the toaster breaks, you have a dead toaster there on the side of your fridge taking up space and you can't get rid of it, but still have to go buy a new one. Or...you fridge breaks and you lose you toaster buying a new fridge and have to buy another one of those too, unless you buy the special toaster/fridge combo again.

The idea is cool, where you put the items in, get a swoober PDF file and confetti out. However, scanners are nowhere near 99.999% accurate, and you want more than that because the original will be gone after the scan.

Probably the next best thing would be a dedicated service that comes to a location in a truck. They pull out a high volume drum scanner, scan all the originals, another person verifies that the scans are OK, then dumps all the documents into the shred bin to be vaporized.

Scanners don't always scan properly the first time. If that happens, you're SOL.

Your right, it would have to be more of commercial appliance. I'm just trying to figure out how to get out of doing the work. Maybe I'll go to Labor Ready.

Maybe you could put the scanner 50ft above a burning barrel . That way if the scan goes bad you can jump over the flame to catch it. Not only would it be effective, it would make your day more interesting.

The shredder/scanner idea is from an episode of 30 Rock.
