Macbook as USB drive

Is it possible to turn a Macbook/Pro into a USB hard drive by hitting a certain key combo when booting up?

no. Mac book does not allow you to do anything except exactly what Apple wants you to do.

Nope. Target mode (where you hit "T" while booting) is only available on the Macs with FireWire. You can do this on a Macbook Pro, but you can't with USB.

The main issue has to do with signaling-protocols. USB is not a DMA bus-mastering connection and requires CPU-arbitration at the hardware level. This would require implementing USB in a non-standard way to force one CPU/computer into the target disk mode.

It's a really handy feature though. You just start the transfer wizard, set the old computer into target disk mode and it transfers all your user-profile settings and documents to the new computer and everything's exactly the same on your new computer.

Going off tangent here, I'd like to see some type of protocol on gigabit Ethernet where it can be used instead of IEEE 1394, where it doesn't use TCP/IP's frame structure, but one that is dedicated for block reads/writes like iSCSI or whatnot. Then have the ability to boot target mode from that.

No. Why would you want to do that?

OK, I'm brain dead. I didn't realize that that (FC over Ethernet) even existed. Problem solved. Now, if Apple could support that in target mode.
