You can't Love Something Inanimate Because...?

My wife's grandfather has this saying that drives me bonkers. He says that you can't love an object because it can't love you back. You can't love your car because your car can't love you back, but you can like your car.

So I say, but, if you can't love it because it can't love you back, how can you like it if it can't like you back?

Anyway, I can't decide if he is a genius or just bonkers. Any thoughts on this? Is there anything to it?

He is about 110 years old (okay, 91+) and he says this about 15 times each time we see him. Apparently he's been saying it for the better part of 30 years.

He's an old coot. History is full of people that have fallen in love with people that don't love them back. Are they not really in love, then? I love my cat, but I doubt she has the same sense of love that I do. Does that mean I don't love my cat?

Do you really love the lamp, or are you just saying it because you saw it?

I'd say its good advice.

To me, at its core, its saying 'real love' is for living things (family/people and pets). It's a good motto not to get too attached to 'things' over 'people'.

My vote is for genius.

I love my bikes, love my socks, my fancy pens, my jewelry, my fishies (they don't do a heck of a lot of lovin' back!) and all sorts of stuff. Suddenly I feel rather materialistic ....

I love my violin. If something happened to it, I could get another one, but I couldn't replace it.

I really like my bikes. However, if something happened to them, they could be replaced.

Wow, my first thread that materialized into something more than 5 or 6 replies!! Let's see if we can get this thing onto a second page while we are at it!

I am now a FOOster, regardless of how long I have been at this prior to this!

I like KTs reply best so far, though.

I used to love a teddy bear when I was little. My son loves a stuffed killer whale and my daughter loves her stuffed Easter bunny. When you love something, it is not dependent on being loved back.

I've also loved many girls who never loved me back BTW...

Ok, I got one. I love playing the guitar, but since it doesn't love me back, I guess I only like playing it.
