"Old" people back in college...

Maybe not really "Old" but, old by college girl standards...

You have been in the industry for quite some time and you are there just because you need the degree to move up on the ladder... much of the stuff you already know. Then you find yourself sitting there listening to some mofo giving a ******** explanation of something. You look around and see a WTF face on every classmate and silently execute a facepalm maneuver because you know you could have done a better job at explaining the matter at hand.

Sometimes you just want to get up, grab the marker out of the professor's hand, smack him in the head with the eraser, hijack the class and explain your classmates the stuff yourself.

Do you? Ever?

No! Never!!!(making an exception about not using absolutes for this one) Specially Florida.

Just sit there, listen, hand in assignments and take the exam. All you want is the degree, right? Then just do the work. Don't try to correct the education system, you'll lose.

I was the annoying know-it-all, one-up'd-the-teacher student in college. I was kicked out of class a lot. The teacher never called on me to answer questions. But I was always right and had my proof and even got to sub for the professor when they were gone a few times (boy, my fellow students really hated me then).

I was "old", too. Well, only a few years older than everyone else but it sure felt like a few decades.

Interesting reaction. The two graduate classes I teach have students with an average age of 37. Most of them have a tremendous amount of useful life experience, and are eager to find ways to enhance it. I realize that there are many different kinds of teachers, some more talented than others. But, if you really want to get up there and teach, earn the degree and teach. It's not as easy as it might seem on the surface. Just "explaining" things to students doesn't necessarily mean they'll follow your explanations, or even if they do, that they'll be able to apply the information/concepts in meaningful ways. Each semester I struggle with finding ways to reach the students that seem to be missing the boat. In most cases it means that I must work to re-frame the material in a manner that resonates with them. But, hey, if you are unhappy with your education you do have a right to demand more. After all, you're paying for it.

I am not attending right now, but the last time I did a couple of years ago, I was older than most of my professors.

However, I avoided the issues by taking courses that were above the level of what I already knew... It is difficult for some required courses, but for the vast majority of courses, get away from the easy courses and stretch yourself. In those courses where you are just stuck, and can't get out of it based on experience, then challenge yourself to make 100% on every assignment and test. There is no excuse not to learn something in every course.

when I read this post all I could think of was

"man, that's what I like about these high school girls, man; I get older, they stay the same age."

I see more and more "older" students each semester! People on second, third or more career changes, retirees in school just to take classes because it's interesting and, more and more - people who are desparate for a job and are trying anything to get out of the temporary job position slump. And I have to say I appreciate these students more in that they WANT it and APPRECIATE it - and not regard it as a grade 13 prom activity. Kudos to all older students!

But I do have to say, as an older student myself - there were some classes, especially the 101 classes - being taught not by a regular professor, but by an adjunct (meaning he/she was/is a professional in their field and has some teaching qualifications) who basically pulled out the book and taught by explaining the bolded words. Those classes demanded the biggest, most jumbo sized cup of coffee I could bring in so I could sit and be a party to someone talking about something for 4.5 hours - and merely turning the pages to go on to the next bolded word. And yeah, I've been known to nod off ...

I couldn't say that at Cal. Too many professors were nobel prize winners, nobel laureates and prolific writers. I barely hung on.

What's even better is when academics try to explain "industries" that they've never participated in. Academia is a TOTALLY different universe. Essential, but not compatible.

That is pretty much the way I interpreted it too. Without going any further has this question been answered
