    Panasonic Lumix G1 / GH1 lens size

With this new Micro Four Thirds camera, when they talk about lens size being 14-45mm (or whatever), are they saying that's the actual size or have they converted those numbers to 35mm SLR equivalents?

That's the actual effective focal length, not 35mm equivalent.

The Micro 4/3 standard has a diagonal dimension on the sensor of about half that of 35mm or full frame. This makes it effectively a 2x crop sensor size. It uses a 4:3 aspect ratio like P&S's instead of the 3:2 aspect ratio like SLR's, so the edge dimensions will be slightly different, but not enough to worry about.

With the 2x crop factor, a 14-45 would equate to a 28-90 in 35mm equivalent.

Well, it's an interesting package for sure...very compact for having the benefit of interchangeable lenses. I tend to think of movie mode in an SLR generally as a bonus rather than a basis for picking one camera over another.

I was just reading a press release about the GH1, and I'd be slightly concerned about ability to explicitly control settings being compromised in favor of whiz-bang auto-features, but overall I think the 4/3 standard is a nicely positioned to provide more options for those who want a nice camera without the size of a true SLR.
