    Add in that historically apples were a major fruit in England and hte seeds are called 'pips' I'd guess originally it was winning by winning by the width or length of an apple pip. About 1/4 of an inch.

    Sort of like the Amreican winning by a hair, which also means close, and not always literally quite as close as the width of a hair.
