Here's a pic of my motorcycle (06' Triumph Thruxton) to help bring things back to bikes:



I've put 6500 miles on it since last may (lotsa opportunities to ride in the south) and have replaced the tires w/new Avon's since this pic.

That bike is simply too gorgeous for words !!

How do your wrists and forearms feel after 3 or 4 hours ?
I mean, could doing a state-to-state run be done with any
type of comfort ?

It's actually not that easy to detect when a motorcycle has finished making a turn and. With a car, you can have a switch in the steering column that detects when the wheel is turned back to center after making the turn, and switch off the turn signals then. But a motorcycle doesn't turn the front wheel very far or in the same direction of the turn (except at low speeds, when it does). There is no easy way to tell if the rider has made a turn and straightened up again.

So the bikes that do have self-canceling turn signals use a combination of distance traveled and time. The signals stay on until the set distance has been traveled and the timer has expired. So when riding slowly, the signal will cancel after a certain distance; when riding fast, after a certain time. Yamaha pioneered this scheme in their '76 model street bikes and that's what's been used by various mmanufacturers since.

I find that it is a bit of a hassle. I have to put at least as much thought into ensuring that the signal is still on after I merge onto the freeway and then across a couple lanes of traffic as I would to turn off the signal when I was done merging. But I can deal with it, it is not the most anoying thing about my BMW. None of my other bikes have it so I have to remember which bike I am on and which one needs manual cancelling. Not having the signal on when I want it on is worse than signalling when I don't want to. Of course any motorcyclist who depends on cars seeing his turn signal and avoiding him is probably not going to live long.

None of the cars I have driven have been able to cencel the turn signal when I make a lane change. The steering wheel doesn't turn far enough to engage the cancel switch. So I am wondering Pcad, do you regularly drive down the road with your blinkers on after making a lane change?

Thanks for the compliment! I've been wanting a Triumph since learning to ride on my brothers 76' Tiger. The wrists and such do take a bit of abuse on this bike but with only about 110 til reserve you get the opportunity to stretch. Love this bike!!

Oh stop, I have no problem riding my ST without crashing it. I do it every friggin day this time of year. In fact my favorite ride is down to Manhattan. Riding in NY City RULES.

You do sound like one of those idiots who think they know everything about motorcycling. Uh-huh. We'll inscribe that on your gravestone there genius.

The odds are with you. But you know that.

This is what I know about motorcycling so far:

• Don't overcook the turns.

• Be careful in the rain.

• Watch out for the cars, you are invisible to them.

• If they should happen to see you they would just as soon flatten you.

• Society figures that if you're on a motorcycle and you get killed, what the F did you expect?

• It's not if you'll put the bike down but when and will you survive the experience.

So what did I miss? By the way, they only covered parts of this in the two MSF courses I took. They also seemed to think ABS was the Man's Plot to Wrest Control of Our Motorcycles from Us. I told them to take it up with BMW, Honda, Yamaha and all the other major manufacturers.

By the way, even though I ride only 3000 miles annually (on the motorcycle, much more than that on the bicycle) I do think most motorcyclists ride less than that. It's a weekend warrior culture.
