Motorcycles RULE

I rode my ST1300 about 110 miles on Sunday. That bike rules. I rode up to Bear Mountain, where on a weekend it's like a motorcycle show. There were choppers, hot sportbikes, those CanAM three wheelers, a couple of other sport touring bikes, etc. Later, out of sheer curiosity I picked up some motorcycling magazine 2009 Buyer's Guide yesterday, my bike is five years old now. They have the Kawasaki Concours 14 as the Best Sport Touring Bike, and they kind of downplay my ST as 'not keeping up' with 'advances' in the Sport Touring category. That means it's not quite as fast as the Yamaha FJR, the Kawi and the new BMW. WhatEVER. How much faster than 0-100 in 8.4 seconds do you care about?

Here's what I care about: after two hours on any motorcycle your ass is sore, you're hot or cold, and the vibration noise and harshness is getting to you. So how COMFORTABLE you can stay is the only thing that really matters. And the ST is good at that. It's tossable and fast enough to be a blast to ride and it's comfortable enough and offers enough wind protection and smoothness (the motor's probably the smoothest m/c powerplant on the market) so you can ride it all day long. It's as safe as an m/c gets (ABS/linked disc brakes).

The universal comments I read on line about some of these other sport tourers is that they're fast, they're fun, and they're not quite as comfy as an ST. I sat on the Kawi and the FJR in the showroom last week when I brought my bike in for service (needs an OLF and tires). You can feel it just sitting on the bikes.

Very happy with the bike. It's paid for. When will the m/c industry sell me a new one? That's a good question. Maybe when Honda revamps the ST between 2011-2014. Maybe not.

That's all very nice but did you know that during tha last ice age Bear Mountain was covered by 3000 feet of ice. The proof is in the rocks up there.

That would have sucked for motorcycling. Not a problem. I have electric gloves.

This stuff renews my lust for a motorcycle/scooter, but the more I read, the more I realize I don't know anything about buying one, and the 1971 bike I rode when I was 12-16 doesn't really count.

Ahhhh, continue lusting.

Some day soon, though, I hope!

Why do you want to move on then ?
I dont know about you, but Ive had about 20 bikes and got rid of most of them
only because NBF hit. I usually regretted getting rid of the last paid for one about
a year into the payments of the current one, and always wanted something else.
If you have something you're happy with, stick with it. I will GUARANTEE you, you
will not find a better bike for what you do than what you have

After all bikes from Dirt(150), to HDs(2), Sportbikes(3) a Stella scooter
Heres what Im looking at, really :

I'm always curious what the motorcycle industry is cooking up. Motorcycles are cool. But I have yet to see anything new that's cooler than my 2004, so I'm not trading up anytime soon. Like I said, it's paid for, and that is the best feature of all. Plus Honda just juked the MSRP on a 2009 ST1300 with ABS to a whopping $17,299.

Ouch.

$17,299 for a bike! My car only cost $700 more than that.

Overpriced at that level. The competition is cheaper. But it's a niche bike. I feel the Honda is worth it for the quality and overall ownership experience, but that premium is pushing it. Nobody's getting that, dealers are probably blowing the bikes out for dead cost, which my guess is <$15K.

But it doesn't hurt my resale value. But I doubt I'll trade if for years, maybe many years.

Its all relative though....to me, a 1,500 UJM off of Craigslist is worth more than a
Porsche, because a Porsche will never be a motorcycle.....
I would pay anything for a bike once I convinced myself I 'needed' it, but a
car I wouldnt pay more than 1000.00 for, no matter what it was.

I concur. My 84 Honda I bought for a grand two years ago off of Kijiji and I still love it. Fast to enough to almost get my license suspended and bike impounded + a $10,000.00 fine a few weeks ago. The cop took mercy upon me because he was also a bike nerd. Gave me a ticket for 100 kms in an 80 instead of the 132 in an 80 I was actually doin(I was slowing down when he got me, as well)

Bikes are alot of fun, but you need to keep yourself under control.

Hah yes, yes I do. Normally I'm not that kinda of a rider. I had a Dodge 1500 menacing me. He was right on my arse. I'm talking five feet off. This was on a two lane highway out in the sticks near my home city. I tried waving him around; nothin doin. I flashed my brake light at him to get him to back off; nada. At this point I was fairly worried; if a deer had jumped out of the woods along the road there, I'd have had the choice of bisecting it or hitting the brakes and getting run down by Mr. Pickup behind me.

So I opened the throttle to put some distance between the two of us as I was taught in riding school. He kept up to me until I hit about 120kms/hr. I continued accelerating to build a safe distance because at this point, I was kinda scared. Thats when the cop came over the hill in the other direction. When he pulled me over, I told him about the pickup's behaviour and he shook his head and said "I saw him behind you, but he pulled off somewhere. I don't know whats wrong with some people."

I ended up talking to the cop about bikes and bicycles for about 45 minutes on the side of the hwy, turns out we go to the some of the same places for MTN biking.

Sorry for the novella, just wanted to tell my story.

Ah, they're more than that. Try driving through the Prairies when there's tons of grasshoppers in the fields and on the roads. Hitting those things at 60+ mph is a wee bit painful.
