When and why did 'hella' become a word?

Is it short for 'hell-of-a'? Helluva?

I have a co-worker who seems to speak in only Internet-inspired phrases, mannerisms, cliches, and buzzwords.

If I hear or read "epic," "fail", or "this." ever again, I am going postal.

I first heard hella while hangin' with the next door neighbors in my college dorm in 1989. They were from NorCal, so that jibes with the Wiki.

Hella can be used as a replacement for "hell of a", but usually isn't. It's typically used as an adverb, to mean "very."

They also turned me on to Oaktown's 357, while EVERYONE else was spinnin' Ice Ice Baby.

On a related note, who decided it was cool to call people ****** or ******bag again.

I could barely tolerate it in the late 70s, now I'm all crotchety and hating it more than ever.

EDIT: Wow, BF censors hate it as much as I do.

the funniest thing was when the christian kids were forbidden from saying "hella" and had to say "hecka". I totally wanted to record a parody christian punk rock album and call the group "hecka".

Hecka started to catch on for a minute in my town and I forbidden my children from saying the work hecka. I'd make them say hella.

Oddly enough, he refused my suggestion of laying out plastic knives and forks when it came time to dissect a frog.
