we all know politicians are crooks, but we also expect they are experts of spin and slippery double talk and insincere apologies and contrition. So when one responds like this after getting caught embezzeling public money it is so unbelievably funny. Is he serious? unfortunately, probably so.
Let's not get into the politics of it so it stays in foo.
p.s. in case non-uk people are unaware of the background, there was a leak of all members of parliament expenses claims in all its detail to a newspaper and the whole country is outraged with the corruption/swindles/frauds/tax evasions (but all technically legal and legitimate and encouraged) of all the crooks. in any other country there would be rioting in the streets, but not here. we are sheep.

To paraphrase:"It's the government's fault for passing the Freedom of Information Act".
Yeah, if they hadn't done that, your hand wouldn't have been caught in the cookie jar.
