Contribute or not...What would you do?

This year has been a rocky year for me. I teach at two schools and the principal at the second school does not care for me or my teaching style. She has made this year very difficult and put my career in jeopardy. I worked very hard and overcame everything that she threw at me. I will be teaching at one school next year (not this one, thank goodness). The difficult principal has recently announced her retirement. Being that this is my first year in the district, I am not inclined to contribute to the staff gift nor attend her retirement party. Given that we have had such a difficult year, I feel even stronger about not contributing. What would you do?

I wouldn't contribute...or if I did I would just give no more 50 cents.

Heck no.

Can you write a personal message on her card though? 'can't say enough about working with you' or something?

Hmm...

tough call. Personally, I would

-not attend the function if you feel that uncomfortable - that much is certain

-contribute the minimum $ amount towards her gift, if you want

-send a short card of your own expressing something along the lines that you wished your interactions could have been more positive and wish her well in her retirement....this may sound crazy but it might be very cathartic for you. For someone to be that at odds with someone as sweet as you, she must be a bitter old battleaxe and then some, but hey - even battleaxes need love sometimes. We'll all be retiring someday; why not end it on a good note between you. If she is unreceptive, at least you did the right thing, and it's her loss.

Hey at least I tried....it's your loss

ps, if you go with monkey poo, attend her party and fling it, preferably whilst screeching with bared teeth - makes more of a statement than just sending it

HTFU. contribute a nominal amount, go to the party and be gracious, my dear. You are the future, she is the past...and more importantly, you are better than her. Set the bar, don't lower it. ;0

I'm liking pgoat's advice. Do like everyone should - $1.00 contribution for every year you worked with her.

Increasingly in the business world, it is all about contacts. You will foster relationships with all the other attendees. If it eases your mind any, the Principal will feel worse that you took the high road than if you boycotted the event.

What would you advise your kids to do if given a similar situation? I am guessing it would be similar to this:

I'm going to add a +7(?) here.
$10 or so is a respectable minimum that shouldn't break the bank. Considering your short time working together, appropriate as well. Plus, there are so many politics in education- so you can still look good to the other employees

+1 Never burn bridges. A principle is very well connected in the school district. She may even run for the school board someday. Be positive in your attitude and take the high road.

Another one for Chipcom's approach, a good time to show you are a class act. Inside, you will know you are celebrating....her being gone!

Be the bigger person! In this case especially, it doesn't require that much more time or effort. Plus, if the principal has a negative opinion of you, it never hurts to do something that forces someone to re-evaluate their feelings (for the better, of course).
