Incorrect. Got the boy a phone when he was 15...disabled texting within the next month when we went over his allotted 1500 text messages. Once he turned 18 he went out and got his own phone on his own plan that he pays for himself. He still knows better than to text me or his mother - if he needs to talk, he can call.

A good dad would have upgraded her to an XD.

Cell phones are less necessary than ever. It wasn't that long ago that no one had them and people did fine. If you don't have one now, you can borrow one from just about anyone.

Oh my, how could I have been so wrong. Of course, just tell your 16 yr old daughter to bum a phone from a stranger! Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket!

Yeah, we didn't have phones when we were kids...but we also still had pay phones and emergency call boxes...try finding one of those these days.

I see no danger in bumming a phone from a total stranger in a public place. Pretty much everyone has them, and they will happily help out. I've lent mine on a number of occasions. This is not like accepting a van ride.

The strangers are already there, and if you're by yourself and looking at all scared or in need of help, you will be approached whether you want to or not (even if you have a phone).

Cell phones are a useful device, but it is a mistake to place too much emphasis on them as a safety tool. They do not work everywhere, and they might not be available/functional/whatever when you need them.

I'm 50 years old. My parents find cycling 6-8 hours completely incomprehensible and self indulgent. Of course they're right, but I continue to ignore them as a form of rebellion.

I'd still rather my son or daughter had their own. At least that's an edge they could have in an emergency. I'd also want them to be prepared for the possibility of no cell - then what? But no sense in not taking advantage of cell phones since they exist.

I don't have kids, but I look at it this way - kids should get an allowance. A small, nominal amount, till they're 18. If they want to blab on their cell all day long, my biggest concern would be brain tumors, but barring that, I'd just tell them they have to pay for anything above the basic plan/minutes. They may not like it, but it will help prepare them for the "no free lunch" surprise that catches lots of 18 yr olds off guard due to too much mommy and daddying. I'd try to find ways to help my kids raise the extra money if they really want something (eg, want more cell phone minutes? let's pick a few chores around the house, you do them responsibly and you get a 'raise' in your allowance.)

This 'manna from heaven' entitlement thing is a big problem in my opinion.

It's neither good nor bad. It's just that it's usually obvious when someone needs help. That's good when the person in question can't take care of themselves and a useful person notices. It's bad when there's a person who wants to exploit the situation.

I do agree that people should expect to help themselves and that the rules have changed with time. I used to pick up hitchikers all the time. I don't do it anymore, but that's because normal people don't seem to hitch anymore. When gas goes up to $8 gallon and working people or students just need a lift in, I'll be happy to oblige if I'm driving.

Doesn't even have to be (pre)teens.

My brother is 31 and I'm 35. Our mom finally decided to quit being afraid of her cell phone, and now she sends us text messages all the time. She even figured out how to send pictures, so we get those and texts instead of postcards when the folks are on vacation.
This is all from a woman who previously wouldn't even use the ATM at the bank, and refused to get a CD player until about 5 years ago.
