No hangar/tiedown space? Buy one of these

The Terrafugia an interesting idea, a small plane that has wings that fold up to work as a passable vehicle on the road. Depending if it can maintain highway speeds, it would be an interesting way for a pilot to do medium to long trips, although I don't think it would ever go production.

This was done a long time ago (probably in the 50s or so), but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Anyway, the general public should not, under any circumstances, be allowed flying cars. Absolutely no way in hell.

Flying cars were the wave of the future in the late 40's and 50's. It ended up being way too impractical.

The twin piston engine thing was pretty cool...

+1. Most of the American public cannot handle two dimensions, much less three. However for someone who has a PPL, one of these would make for a nice recreational plane. Fly to the airport, then drive to the resort.

The same idea gets refreshed every 5-10 years. There's been dozens of these concepts over the decades, and not one of them has ever gone beyond prototype stage and maybe a few kits to ambitious pilots with experimental certifications, to the best of my knowledge.

The problem is the compromises that have to be made to be able to fly, and to drive at highway speeds almost inherently mean that in being able to do both, it will be good at neither.

The idea of the general public having one wouldn't be a threat. It would be illegal for them to fly it without a license.

Yea, because people never drive cars illegally.
