Not happy with new motorcycle purchase. (venting)

It's not the motorcycle (MV Agusta F4 1000R) that I am unhappy with, it's the dealership at this point. I absolutely love the motorcycle and I have never ridden or seen a bike that I like more. However the dealership is another thing.

I purchased the MV on June 16th. I traded in an 07 ZX14. When I traded it in I handed them a title and a check for $8,000. I did ask them to hold the check for two days which they said no problem. The only catch was that they could not send me the Certificate of Origin until they deposited the check. I cleared it with my credit union and they said no problem.

The following day I took care of the paper work with my credit union and the money was deposited into my account. I immediately called the dealership and told them they could go ahead and deposit the check.

So in short they got my ZX14, they got the title, and they got the money for the bike. The only catch is that I still don't have my Certificate of Origin so in a few days I won't be able to ride the bike since I won't be able to register it or have a license on it. This really sucks since I am leaving for vacation on Monday and won't be able to take my new bike. I am heading out of town tomorrow morning for business and will be returning home Sunday night. Even if the Certificate or Origin arrives today I won't be able to register it in time to take my new bike on vacation.

I called them about the certificate on 6/27 and was told that it was mailed on 6/26. I called them back on 7/3 and was told that it was mailed on 7/2. I only live three hours away from them (I'm in Charleston WV, they are in Akron OH). I'm pretty sure it should have gotten here by now even via snail mail.

So, would anyone else be getting pissed off at this point?

I am really sorry to hear this. For some reason, the motorsports industry just attracts shadiness. I am lucky to have a really good relationship with my dealer and mechanic.

In Myrtle Beach they are now very hard on Motorcycles. They could actually impound the bike for it down there and I am not willing to pay that ticket, especially when it is not my fault.

It is licensed (temporary license) for 30 days, however the 30 days ends on 7/16/09 and I am going on vacation until 7/19/09.

My money's on you getting a phone call in a couple of days: "Yeah, sorry, but we found some significant mechanical problems with your trade-in that you did not disclose, so you are going to have to pay the bill of $1000 to fix them before you get your MCO."

They do this kind of crap with financing all the time, too. Did you sign a "bailment agreement" when you bought your new MC? If so, it probably said that the whole deal was contingent upon lots of things, and that the dealer could back out at any time and you'd have to make them whole - or return your new MC and pay the depreciation on it (which is something like 40% once you drive it off the lot). (FTR: a Mitsu dealership in Marietta GA tried this crap with me when I bought a car a while back - claimed the financing fell through a week after I bought the car... once I lawyered up, they went away and magically the deal was on again)

Car dealers are sleazy like that.

Nope, no bailment agreement. I believe the only paperwork I signed there was the title to my trade in and the registration paper for the temporary license. I may have signed the bill of sale as well. I did the financing through my personal credit union.

As for the trade in it had 2,700 miles so good luck finding any issues with it. I see what you are saying though and at this point I wouldn't be suprised if you are right.

The lawyer idea will be a last resort.

I have not received a reply to my e-mail. I did call the WV DMV to see if I could get a temp WV license without the certificate. They told me they couldn't help me and that I would have to call the dealer.

The good news is that there is still plenty of things to do at the beach without the bike. This will just allow me to spend more time with my sister while I am there. I will be staying with her most of the time but I will also be spending a lot of time with my neighbors since they will be there at the same time. I'm looking forward to getting away from everything for a few days.

Thats too bad. Most of Rt. 17 is a great road to ride.
Im on it a lot and if you wanted to risk it, there are no
police except for the rare one hiding in the beginning of a town
or something. If you go the limit, I cant see you getting pulled.
When you start to get close to Summerville or Mt. Pleasant it
uglies up real fast, that could be problems
Rt. 17 through Darien / Brunswick GA is fabulous too
    Have a nice trip !

Did you see what your credit union could do for you? As lenders, they have quite a bit of pull when it comes to dealers and "future" business. My credit union has always gone to bat for me.

Unfortunately they couldn't do anything and since it is out of state the odds of that particular shop ever dealing with them again is pretty low.

It's kind of a coincidence but the certificate was in the mailbox when I got home this evening, too late for me to register the bike before I go to the beach but at least it is here.

I do think it is sort of funny though, they told me it was mailed on 6/26/09 and on 7/2/09. It wasn't even signed and notarized until 7/3/09 and it was post marked 7/6/09. Even though I finally have it I still don't appreciate being flat out lied to, especially after buying this expensive of a bike.

Maybe I am out of line though and should just accept it. After all, it's not like I have a choice.

Only reason I can afford the vacation is because I will be staying with my sister. I got a really good price on the motorcycle and had a pretty good trade in. That is how I was able to afford it. Well, that and the fact that I work two jobs.

I understand what you are saying but it would be nice to be able to take the motorcycle that I am paying for to the beach. Unfortunately due to someone else not doing their job I am now unable to do that.

    'potato-potato'......but I'm a Harley guy.

You're most certainly not out of line nor do you have to accept it. Just remember the old adage that says if you don't like something you'll tell a thousand people. Tell your story far and wide... and include the dealer's name. Don't embellish or exaggerate, just tell your story. That's not libel or slander, but with that kind of publicity, they'll either make it right with you with some freebies or their business will suffer.

Post up your story on your motorcycle forums, too. On the HD forums I joined when I had my bike, they even had a sticky "Bad dealer" and a "Good dealer" thread for people to relate their experiences.

I know the guy at the Yamaha dealer that finds them for me. He wants to buy the bike so he makes sure that I get the right stuff. He's been nagging me for about 5 years now. It's not so hard, it's just regular maintenance stuff is all I need.
