'Internet speak' in Journalism (and metro train operator falls asleep)

Latest Metro Fail: Sleeping on the Job
...Meanwhile, in the latest Metro fail, a 14-year-old boy took video of an operator apparently nodding off while a train is speeding down Green Line tracks between College Park and Greenbelt...
I usually try to avoid talking like an internet nerd in public or with people I don't know, but is this becoming more common? Is there still a line between what is acceptable for business/professional conduct and more personal communication? Maybe I'm expecting too much from a news blog (even though its NBC, not a personal one).

Taking a nap between stops while you operate public transportation seems to be a very efficient use of one's time, too.

in uther newz, mah tiperiter haz brokun shift key

Honestly though, that's dumb. Perhaps the author has gotten so used to poor grammar that they didn't even realize they nounified a verb, in which case they're dumb for not proofreading or just plain dumb, or perhaps they thought it was cute, in which case they're dumb for having no dignity when writing professionally.
