Made in America

I see people jump over themselves to "buy American." Pride is a wonderful thing, but do people realize that most of what is used to [literally] make/mint the money used to buy American as a way of sticking it to the American companies who manufacture overseas (or overland) .. is NOT made in America?

Ink: Canada
Material: Probably imported from China/Russia
Printers: Probably made in China

Okay, back to the regular Foo transmission. I had a moment.

I actually work for a manufacturing company that sells an American made product. Regardless of what the retailers may say, they could care less where something is made, as long as they can make margin on it.

Probably? "I want it to be true, so I'll say probably even though I don't really know."

Its a shame, isnt it...
We have been Pavlovianly trained by shameless corporate profiteers to think
buying outside of America is OK and therefore more and more stuff is off-shored
to the point of not having a choice.
Just step away from your WAL*MART 'entertainment center', walk out of your
house, look around your town, buy a newspaper if you can still read per chance,
and see what this mentality has done to your community

It is more than just that. The Chinese government keeps the Yuan undervalued in order to make their export goods more attractive to the world economy.

Do a google for "The Big Mac Index" to get an idea of how the dollar stacks up to other monetary units around the globe.

Not sure what they are printed on in other countries.

And this, mein freund, is the definition of "probably." the ink is made in Canada for certain. No idea (or care) where the papyrus is harvested. but I'd bet from the least expensive source ..

I'm positive that greenbacks are printed on paper reinforced w/ 100% federally subsidized US-Grown anti-weevil genetically engineered non-union harvested cotton.

A rant about a total uncertainty is not the best of rants.

Here's a thought, and I'm just thinking out loud, why is ink sourced from Canada? Is it the cheapest ink, or is there some other reason, like durability or whatever? Would it be safe to assume that China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia could make ink that is less expensive? If expense is the only criteria of which we source our materials, I would think that our ink wouldn't be made in Canada. If expense isn't our only criteria, can we assume quality is? If we assume quality is, can we assume that the rest of the materials "probably" aren't made in China?

Wonder if the color shifting ink is proprietary technology and can only be sourced in Canada?

My 'real' career was/is hi-tech printing. Decades worth....
There are plenty of inks made in the USA and
printers use it all the time in the places Ive worked.

Having no life finally pays off

I say buy American for the point of buying Local. In other words, for the environmental reasons. I feel better buying something that's traveled a shorter distance but I don't go out of my way looking for it. But I try. I think it's important to support the struggling people in other countries, but not the American owned sweatshops.

Seriously, we can't do everything, but we can pick what is important and follow that. For example, recycling is great, but it takes a lot of fuel to recycle. I can use paper plates to save water from dishwashing, or, use regular dishes but then there's the water factor.

I GIVE UP!

what do you think of britain letting the devalue to boost exports?

devaluation is a 2 edge sword. it drives up prices for imports.

.. so I stopped in Wal-Mart the other day. I found CF bottle cages (with Bell logo) that I actually bought and installed. Wal-Mart is an American store, yes?

I actually wasn't born here. Nor did I grow up here. My citizenship is barely a month old, after 20+ years of living here.

My passport was made in America, I think.

Not really sure what the point of all this is, but it fits.

I find Wal-Mart completely unAmerican. But that's just my left wing California arse talking.

WalMart use to be run by Sam Walton, who believed that it would be based on "For Americans, by Americans"

But when he passed on, his surviving family took it into a different direction and not what Sam dreamed it to be.

So yes, as of now, I myself don't see it as very American as pertaining to what Sam Walton wanted and what I believe it would be.

They don't sell apple pies. Their filing is a cheap substitute.
