Personal Space

So I lost my wallet yesterday on a ride. I didn't realize until this morning. I went looking for it this morning in the car when the gas light came on. Uh oh. At that point I head right into work and make a call to my office to have them wire me some money as my bank is not located where I'm at. I require a fairly decent amount of money to operate on a daily basis so the wire was a hefty amount as I'm here the rest of the week. I get to the nearest Western Union and fill out their little form when this man walks up leans on the counter, maybe 6" from me, and is looking over my shoulder. This irritates me to no end, people getting in my space unwelcome like that. The lady behind the counter is even looking at this guy crazy. She starts pulling the money out and I tell her to hold on. I look over at the guy and politely ask him to please step back. He was appalled. The lady behind the counter sided with me and asked him to respect the privacy of my transaction. I mean, I could feel the guy breathing on me he was so close. Anyway he stepped back an huffed. I got my money and left. Man it annoys me when people do that. Just so you know I like my personal space. If we're engaged in a conversation or something of that nature it's fine but otherwise, stay the hell away from me.

That would freak me out as well, I am not sure I would have the balls (of course I don't literally have balls, ovaries doesn't have the same ring to it) to actually say something. I usually go for the Evil Glare of Doom tm.

I've been in physical altercations over this. I really don't like people getting in my space.

Was it the old yawn + stretch = jerked elbow to the bridge of the nose + "Woopsie!"?

I've gone bezerk over strangers touching me. That's past my tolerance boundary. I was riding in a hot bus many years ago when a ******** guy (literally he was ********) reached out and grabbed my arm. I was utterly incensed and loudly said:

"GET.YOUR.HAND.OFF.ME" he and let go of me immediately. Can't stand strangers touching me ******** or not.

Once I was waiting for a bus with my husband at the time and this aggressive female panhandler that frequented that area interrupted our conversation and sidled up right up beside him, way too close, touched his arm or something. I don't remember exactly what I said but the word "*****" was mentioned.

He didn't attempt to "restrain" me. You know it would it would be a whole different story otherwise.

I cannot stand another male getting into my personal space. Women I'm more tolerant of. But with men I go into mental fight mode.
I don't like men who like to hug, either.

The guy is looking over your shoulder, watching how much money you're getting, and he's appalled when you ask him to step back? I don't know that I would have been so polite.

Honestly, I believe there are a lot of people out there who just don't know any better and just don't have any self awareness. I make it a point to be polite and courteous because of that. A person's reaction, however, is what can make the ass come out in me.

Having been in Asia for a while, I find my personal space bubble is *much* smaller than that of most North Americans, though larger than many Chinese. I have my limits (like if the guy in front of me on the jam-packed elevator hasn't washed his hair in weeks), but in general, my tolerance is pretty high.

I learned this by almost getting beaten up in Vancouver when I accidentally brushed a really big guy walking the opposite direction down the street. He immediately twirled around and loudly asked me what my problem was. I'm so used to being jostled and bumped when walking in public areas that I hadn't even noticed.

3 feet, baby! That's my rule. I've had to ask a few folks to step back when they weren't respecting the traditional American 3 feet of social distance. (They got PO'd but tough muffies!) I need to be at least an arm's length away from anyone I don't really know.

You were totally in the right.

CJ, you should have beat the close breather to death with the corpse of a helicopter salesman.
