Man, I could build a PC to smoke those specs and still have enough left over for a plane ticket to Hawaii.

Haha I highly doubt it. People have tried to compare the specs and have ended up with a computer over 2$k. This is an all in one computer remember and the mac software is basically untouchable

p.s. I also pre ordered the next version of Mac OS X for $10

And then how much would it cost to shrink it down to the same footprint as the iMac while using the same OS? You can even say the same thing about any laptop, but that would be missing the point of the design.

Here's a roughly equivalent Windows machine. Take out the cost adders like the Blue-Ray and better video card and you're probably looking at an identically priced all-in-one.

i dont love mine, i think it's pretty good. Nice looking hardware, nice to use OS. Has a 'closed' feeling about it though, like, I dunno, kinda restrictive. I dont think that's OSX itself, but more the way Apple does things, or perhaps it's the way Apple has it's hands tied (iTunes, DVD movie player, moving from one computer to another). Most stuff comes out for Windows first (Chrome, Firefox) and Safari, well I dont use that. You cant resize windows as easily on OSX (only bottom right corner of window is active) and I find myself loading up Windows 7 quite a lot.

I also know when I buy various hardware, it's very likely to work with Windows but with Mac, I need to ensure it'll run. That's just simple (what's the word I'm looking for).. market penetration? Windows is 90% of the computers out there so of course hardware manufacturers are gonna go outta their way to ensure things work well with Windows.

Anyway, it's still a good purchase. I bought mine cheap of eBay and despite highlighting the negative points above, overall I've been pleased with it and everytime anyone looks at it, they "wow" with awe. In fact, it's the reason I bought my second Mac: a Macbook.

I"ll end on some more good points though: you sure can tell that a lot of thought has gone into designing Apple products, both hardware and software. There's certainly no 'committee' feel to it (and I'm trying not to use popular cliches found on the interweb but I cant htink of any other way to say it) but it feels like real designers with a flair have designed these machines, rather than mimpties at Microsoft or any other HP/Dell/FunnyBrand company.

One more (positive) thing I'd like to add: all these dumb companies wanna make products like Apple. Dell laptops, Sony all-in-one desktops... man they really suck. I think part of the problem why I wrote a few negatives above is because I haven't spent the time to familiarize myself. Sure I know the basics but I prefer an in-depth look into the computer and I just dont have the time, so that manifests itself as negativity, perhaps unjustified.

Care to expand? At the end of the year, I'm looking at an iMac or one of the Sony Vaio counterparts. What about those listed above suck?

You're absolutely right...I wouldn't touch it. I like games.

Hmmm...trip to Hawaii versus small footprint. That's a tough choice.

I can deal with a case, especially if it allows easy upgrades...unlike an integrated design.

iMac 24" use IPS display panels, just the equivalent monitor alone will run you at least $450. You better be pretty tight with William Shatner if you wanna score deals on HI tix after speccing out the rest of the build. Maybe spec out an equivalent, but not quite "smoke" the iMac and you can do it.

Macs not bad for gaming, as they run Windows pretty well, but yeah, if you don't mind having a case on your desk, might as well have one, as parts are easier to swap out as upgrades or replacements are needed.
