The gods of Jury Duty hate me!!!

Why do the gods of Jury Duty hate me so much?

I have no issues with Jury Duty and see it as a civic responsibility and would be happy to do it at any time its not horrendously inconvenient.

This is now the 3rd time I've been summoned in my life.

1st time (Florida) I was in college. The summons happened to coincide with my 1st day of classes. Remember in college how you get dropped if you aren't there on 1st day of classes? I had to make arrangements with all profs ahead of time even the ones that were listed as "staff" (had to research to determine professors). By the way, NO I could not get out of it...I tried.

2nd time (Florida) was about 1 year later and ALSO came exactly on the first day of classes. Same story, but at least I had the routine down the 2nd time.

3rd time (Washington, this occurrence) is for 9/11/2009. Remember that Vegas wedding I have planned? Well, I leave for week long Alaskan Cruise honeymoon on 9/12/2009. It says there is a 2-day minimum requirement and it also says on there that I am summoned for a specific trial and I can't have it postponed. I've went online and used their system to give my reason for trying to be excused or get my duty postponed, hopefully they'll see reason.

Why do the gods of Jury Duty hate me so badly? Did I sentence and innocent man to the gallows in a previous life? I mean, seriously, WTF?

Be a Fully Informed Juror. Once the court figures you for one, they'll kick you out of the pool.

I've been a registered voter since I was 18. In 23 years I've never been summoned for jury duty. Luck of the draw I guess.

I'm not sure how Ga works, but in FL they changed it from voter's registration to driver's license some years back because so many people didn't register to vote because they were too lazy for jury duty.

Here in WA I think they use a database of nearly all public records so that anybody of age can be called.

used to be registered voters here in GA, but I believe they changed it to drivers license or state issued ID to increase the pool. And you can only be called one time every so often, but I'm not sure what that time frame is.

So, being a registered member of the Klingon Hegemony party has nothing to do with it then?

That will get you called for jury duty on The People's Court.

Ive been summoned 3 times. I showed up each time, sat around and was sent home
because they summoned too many people.

That happened the first time I was called. I, however, was not one of the ones they chose to send home.

In CA you are allowed to show up to jury duty within 2 weeks of the date on your summons, you pick the date. You're also allowed to postpone it for several months.

I have been on 2 criminal juries and 1 civil jury, and I've been summoned many times when I didn't end up serving. It is an interesting process if you get the chance to do it.

I've had to testify for the crown/prosecution twice. Second time I didn't even get a free lunch even though I had to take the day off work and go all the way into town. Boo. I've done my duty. In the unlikely event I'm called for jury duty I just spout off about Anarchy/nineteen eighty-four/Down with the Man and whatever else to get me excused.

I have seen people try to get out of jury duty by spouting off during the selection process and the judge will invariably ask "Will a contempt of court charge change your mind?" They shut up after that.

That would be nice, but I don't see anything on the summons (or website) about showing up any time other than when the summons says (a specific day). Also, it seems postponements are normal (discussed on website in the FAQ), however my summons specifically says on the bottom of the instruction area:

(all caps) The court will not consider requests for postponement of this summons. You have been summoned for a specific trial.

That seems odd to summon for a specific trial. Did WA recently change their jury procedures?

Why should having to testify in court earn you a free lunch? Color me confused....

Let's just say I'm a tree-hugger from way back and sat on a logging road (or two) and violated a court order or two. I would tell the judge "what, again?"

Or maybe I could say I support the death penalty for vandalism.
