The Real Guitar Hero is gone

Les Paul has shuffled off this mortal coil at the age of 94. Guitars around the world gently weep.

I think that there will always be musical prodigies coming up. Les Paul was such an innovator and introduced so much electronic technology to music and guitars especially. Not sure that we will ever see something like that again, because he was a creator, and innovator. Now, as far as guitars go, we will just see improvisation on a theme.

There is a thread in the music section as well...I was just writing an article about videotape and had to go over his history as a tangent. He was playing with Bing Crosby who had a major hand in developing the use of recording tape, specifically the Ampex corp.

For all his multi tracking gizmo genius, my favorite les recordings are the cuts from the first JATP. You can really hear the Django influence....and when you took away all the studio gimmicks and fanfare, guess what? rhubarb red still played the snot out of his axe.

Somebody needs to link a youtube of that commercial where Les asks a guy playing guitar in a bar if he can try it. The guy lets him and Les rips out a nice lick. The guy asks, "dude...what's your name?". Les says, "It's on your guitar.".

I'd link it up, but youtube is blocked here at work.

That's a good 'un

Dunno if it is on yt but there was a short lived late night weekend network tv show in the mid 80s, and on one episode ca. 1983 hosted by Billy Squier, the guest of honor was LP. Apparently the producers asked him if there were any gtr heroes he'd want to have join him, and supposedly his answer straightaway was jeff beck.

I have a nasty VHS copy but it is truly worth watching if you can find it. Right before beck ditched his pick and he is on fire. He and Les looked like they were having a lot of fun.

I owned a Les Paul guitar, much like this one several years back. I sold it to pay some bills. It would have been better to file for bankruptcy and keep the guitar.

RIP Les.

No. The guitarist is a friend's son. My nephew plays a different instrument. I can PM you details if you want, but I hesitate to provide too much detail about a minor on an open forum.

To hear his wonderful corny old school humor, pick up the Chester and Lester Lp with Chet Atkins. Lots of silly ad libs...

Here is a nice video, a bit long, but shows how vibrant he was, even at 90
