10 years ago today...

It was the first day of my vacation and I was at home enjoying a quiet evening and after getting the baby tucked in was getting ready for bed when the phone rang... I never like it when the phone rings at 11 pm as it is never good news.

My brother in law was on the phone and I knew something was wrong... he never cries.

He told me that I had to come to the hospital as it was almost certain I would never see my nephew alive as he had been in a horrific car crash and was undergoing emergency surgery.

He was coming north when a lady coming southbound crossed the centre line in what we now believe was a suicide attempt... my nephew had just turned from glancing over / talking to his friends when he saw the car swing across and were told he managed to swerve right just enough that it was not a total head on.

The car was unrecognizable after the accident and the woman died instantly while the jeep flipped six times and the front end of the truck was pushed right back into the cab on the driver's side.

There were many people on the scene as it is a busy road and a 911 call was made immediately.

My nephew was still conscious when help arrived and he and his friends were airlifted to the medical centre and required emergency surgery to stem internal bleeding... he had broken nearly every bone in his body below his waist... ruptured his spleen... it was very bad.

When I arrived at the hospital I went in to see the young man I had known since day one and I'll be damned if he looked fine save for the tubes and iv's... he did not have a scratch above the neck.

The nurses were not positive and said it was a small miracle he had even survived the crash... a bigger miracle was that his friends escaped with minor injuries.

I told everyone that he could not die...

That was ten years ago today.

My plans for today are to talk to my nephew and see when we are going to get together and celebrate the anniversary and more than that, simply celebrate life.

seriously man, almost shed a tear (I hardly ever cry...some times I wish I could) tell him a stranger says "Hi!" and is happy that he can reply to it.

When he woke up or rather could be kept down... the first thing he did was ask for a pen and paper and wrote...

"friends okay ?" and "my fault?"

I used to be his hero.

Was thinking that perhaps we have never stopped celebrating...we just don't drink copious amounts of Drambuie on a daily basis.

What a great story, Sixty. I'm hoping your nephew is doing fine today without any after effects of the crash.

He will always have chronic pain, living without a spleen presents some challenges, and he will need hip replacement surgery a lot sooner than most.

We make a good looking pair as neither of us looks as messed up as we are.

Wow man, I so happy he made it. The thought of this happening to any of my nephews or friends kids makes me shutter. Have fun celebrating, no matter what you both decide to do.

Peace,

I was actually worried that the end of your first post was going to be very, very bad. Luckily the opposite was true, and I am extremely glad for that! And even if you're not still his only hero, I imagine you are probably one of a very select group of heroes in his eyes.

Great story! Did your nephew recover fully? Or was there permanent damage? Lemonade tastes damn good at times, thanks for the inspiration.

Ten years ago today I was probably worried about Y2K, or something like that. I was making a good deal more money then than I am now and was usually a bit worried about losing it. And I was worried about approaching 40 yrs old.

It all seems kinda petty compared to something like this.

I'm glad things worked out so well.
