When did matresses get so freaking expensive?

I went mattress shopping last night and I swear they must have saw me coming. By the time I left I had spent $2,544 on a mattress and box spring. Normal price on it was $3,799 though so at least I got a decent deal on it.

We did need a new mattress though. I knew ours was getting a little age to it but my wife had been complaining about it hurting her back and side. I decided to sleep on her side night before last to see if it was actually the matress. My back is still hurting! That thing has to go!!!

We're a bunch of pansies. The Flintstones slept on rocks and they turned out just fine.

What size and type did you get?

In 2001 I bought a queen-size mattress and box spring (already had the frame/head/footboard of the bed itself). I spent $1200 for both and I remember that was a bargin price...

I also remember that prices vary by store. I went to one matress-only place and the set started at well over $2,500, but at the furniture stores they started around $1000 or so.

It is a Stearns and Foster latex pillow top, it is a king size. I don't think I could stay married if we had a bed any smaller. Even with a king my eleven pound rat terrier manages to take up half of it somehow.

Its pretty much like Furniture shopping. They sell you the cheapest piece of particle board crap for about 500% markup.

Ha

When my ex moved out she took the bed. So I slept on the couch for a couple months. Being that I did not want to spend much money I ordered an unfinished full sized platform bed in the mail.
Stained and varnished it. Then I picked up a mattress that I found on sale for $120 at a local furniture warehouse. It is more comfortable than the expensive pillow top mattress and box spring she took.

Total cost of my platform bed was: $250

Crazy you should mention this. I went shopping yesterday for a mattress and was thinking the same thing.

I think I'm going to do the bamboo-mat-on-the-floor thing. As a teen I slept that way and it was no problem, it was actually kind of nice. The only reason I own an actual bed was because it was a gift when I bought the house.

There used to be a place here that sold used mattresses. They had a big sign out front saying so. I suppose it was old hotel stock and was in a very low income part of town, but still, my skin crawled every time I drove by the place.

I have an absolutely crappy cheap mattress from ikea. Gives me backaches, but I can't afford anything else. Oh well.

I'd actually prefer sleeping on a futon, but then the vermin would get me (we have roaches. Nasty).

My wife and I need a mattress as well. It's bad when you fight about who gets to sleep on the couch.

I am sure the vermin get you on the cheap mattress, too. You are just asleep so you don't notice.

I can relate to that actually. I sleep better on the couch than I do in our bed.

My wife and I like different mattresses, so we bought one of those sleep number beds. It works out really well for us, and wasn't too expensive when we bought it 6 years ago.

The Duxiana mattress is supposed to be the best mattress money can buy. You'll need $7,000, but those that try have tried it swear by it. I'm not one of those people. I wonder if after spending $7k physiologically you have to say it's the best thing ever for fear of being ridiculed? Is it anything like spending $5k on a Pinarello and swearing that's it's better than the $1,100 Trek?

Get a store display model... Best $800 i ever spent.

ANd don't get me started on mattress pricing. It makes just as much sense as airline pricing.

Consumer Reports basically will not rate matteresses because the bedding industry has made the issue so confusing. I really do not enjoy shopping for bedding, as it seems like such a scam and it is impossible to compare apples to apples.

I'm a light sleeper, and don't feel any vermin...but even if they did get on the cheap mattress, my bed's actually off the floor, so there is slightly less chance of the vermin crawling all over me.

Last time I was mattress shopping I was asked to leave a store because I was writing down specs and prices.

I'm due for a new one. Sam's club is looking good...
