? - What 2 do - Big cat got loose 3 wks ago, and wants back out ...

And ever since, he wants back out. He's a rescue cat who has been inside since he was about 4 months old and has enjoyed all the benefits of it - including shots, heart worming, flea control, excellent food and kitty friends.

Since I moved - he's missed his longtime friend - who is now an outdoors cat (yeah - thanks old roommate) who has had a litter of kittens, not sure if any or some survived the raccoon infested city area.

Thought about bringing in his long time friend, but she never liked, and actually hated my kitten - treated her very badly -enough so that I had to tear them apart - with my little girl wandering off crying and the other female (in heat or not) just sitting there glaring at the path my kitten left at --- and then slinking down after my kitten again.

not gonna happen.

My dilemma is - what to do with my big red cat.

Since his escape - and his "capture" where he ran by my open door - where I was sitting for 3 hours till 5 am and he ran by all freaked out and ran in the house and I thought "LIFE WAS GOOD AGAIN" has not turned out like that.

He wanders around from window to window, scratches non-stop at the back door to get out and constantly - in a small kitten voice moan to the outside. He's downright aggrivating.

And he's not treating my kitten the same. She wants to play - he ends up smacking her good and hissing. And of course - she's a kitten so she comes back for more.

He is neutered. And he has lived with her since she was born.

I'm quite getting tired of the nonstop crying at the windows and scratching at the doors by him - not to mention being rather abrupt with my kitten.

He wants to be outside, yet I live in the city - not good. Plus I have eradicated fleas from them - from ex-roommates house and do NOT want to deal with inside fleas again and have to keep putting the poison on their skin so's the fleas bite and die.

Oh yeah - and he's a traumatized kitty - identifies with me only - although he did identify and be lucidly friendly with a guest this past weekend - otherwise than that - any people in the apt - he hides.

Anyone ever deal with this kinda situation. He wants out. But I do not want an indoor/outdoor cat.

It's been nearly 2 weeks, but he's picking up on "hue" and loudness. He's a great cat and has done nothing wrong - unless you call a "taste of freedom" being wrong.

Tude,
try a cat leash? Give him a taste of the outdoors, little bit each day, but maintain control,....

Worth a try?

He is sooo skittish. Doubt it.

Hoping this new activity goes away, but it seems to be getting worse. It's like he's in heat or something and has no control.

Very aggrivating late at night too.

But thanks

He would not ever be a good placement, at least so I think. He is not a real people person kinda kitty - he was better, no great at where I used to live - where he grew up. I've totally disrupted his conditions - by moving - and into a place I thought would give both cat and kitten a great place to live, but he was really looking for his long lost buddy before (meowing during day, especially at windows), and now it's pretty much nonstop.

'Cept if I have someone in the house and he hides.

Want to keep him, but it's getting on the semi-rediculous side now ...

My cat Promo got a taste of "outside" 3 years ago and has never stopped trying to get back out, he runs out any and every chance he gets, it will prob never end for you either Tude so you have to be extra careful every time someone comes in or goes out of your home, and be careful with cat leashes as I tried one and it almost killed my cat, he freaked out the moment he found he was restrained by the leash and he scratched the crap out of me when I helped to get it off of him, I did a bit of research and found that many cats have died while leashed.
EDIT: I looked for the article I read but can't seem to find it now? but what I did find was a bunch of article saying and showing how well the cat leashes work!? so who knows, give it a try, you never know.

Tude, my cat went from an indoor/outdoor to a strictly indoor cat.

He is going to crave exploring the outdoors because he had a taste of it. What I did was I limited what he was able to see outside by closing the blinds and not making it so easy to see what was going on outside.

When he started to whine, I put him in a room - the bathroom - and when he got real loud I ignored him. When I finally let him out, he was quiet, appreciating the fact that he was no longer in a smaller place. When he would go by the window and try to get between the blinds, I'd yell at him to get away.

It will take time but he will get used to being strictly indoors again.

My sister did the harness thing and there is no guarantee that he won't get out of that. Plus if you do that, he will always want to go out on his leash and you will be having to deal with that constantly.

I agree with this.

My 2 cats are indoor boys, I can't let them out because of coyotes and raccoons. If you limit your kitty's exposure to the outdoors, he should settle down after a bit.

Think this will be tried. He has to stop, for my sake and the other tenants around me. Sounds like it will take some time, but hell - Big Boy's mah cat and I've now had him for nearly 3 years and like I said - he is not a real personable cat so putting him into an adoptable situation - he wouldn't be liked - I mean who would want big cat crouched tightly in corner skulking ... I wouldn't.

Thanks Siu, voice of knowledge and numba one on calendar.

But first and foremost - he is NOT going to be hitting my kitten either.

Almost a re-train of some sorts. Thanks!

Good luck with that, Tude. I hope it works out for you. He's worth keeping, he's been your lovey all this time.

Tude, I know you don't want to hear this, but you might need to let Big Boy return to his old ways. Might be worth it to try the leash thing first, but I'm not optimistic. Best to have a happy, healthy, cuddle-bunny, Ming to cherish for the next 20 years than jeopardize that sweetness by allowing her to be harassed.

Actually - his life as well as mine went to hell with roommates self-combustion and life has not been the same since Spring.

My goal: get life to back as it was, well without the hyper combust as it was at the old place.

Just nuked some Tilapia (fish) for us - I keep leftovers for the cats though - it's the only "people" food they get (no soft catfood at all) and I used to give my kitties a dime to quarter size selection a few times a week. Signs of the old ways of doing things. Just did that and it was most welcomed. Perhaps getting back on old routine, etc will help.

A start. And a try for good things.

I can't let my two cats out because the road will kill them, it's like Pet Cemetary where I live. that and I see lots of fox, big birds, cyotes etc... Plus they have been indoor since they were kittens. They have escaped but never retained the desire to leave again. I wouldn't let your well taken care of cat outside since he's been indoor all his life. He has no skills and could get hurt.

Seems to me that letting Big Boy out on a leash will just whet his appetite. I like the idea of confinement in a small room. In terms of beating up on Ming, try a spray bottle every time he does it. Cats generally don't like to get wet. A spray bottle set up stream can be pretty accurate from 6' to 10' away. Keep a couple around in strategic locations and when BB smacks Ming, immediately grab a bottle and give him a squirt.

Hmmm...as teh kitteh is an indoor/outdoor cat, I can't give any advice on how to keep him in, but I do have one for the other situation. When we don't like what teh kitteh is doing, we either squirt him with water or flick him gently on the nose. It doesn't really hurt him, but he HATES having his nose touched in any way, so he stops the behavior pretty quickly after just a few instances of us catching and flicking him. Also, positive reinforcement helps--when you see him being nice and playing with Ming instead, reward him.

I think he is mostly stressed out about all that's been happening, and is taking it out on everyone.

A few of my friends are cat owners and have built cat enclosures so their cats can roam freely inside and "outside" without actually getting out.

There's lots of examples here: http://www.catsofaustralia.com/cat-enclosures.htm

Could get one of these from Dr Foster and Smith.

* Window-mount cat door opens into a spacious screen room for pets
* Single flap, 4-way locking door lets you control your cat's access
* Easily installs in vertically opening windows from 24-1/2" to 34" wide

Give your indoor cat a safe outdoor experience. Window-mount cat door opens into a spacious and secure pet screen room. Durable metal construction melds with a clear single-flap, two-way swinging plastic door to create the ultimate outdoor lounge area. Pet door is mounted into a glass faceplate; door features 4-way locks and a magnetic catch. Outdoor screen area boasts 1" x 1" mesh screen, weather-resistant carpet, and a durable rust-resistant coating. Veranda extends inside your home with a large carpeted ledge to ease access for your cat. Entire unit easily pressure mounts into standard, double-hung windows between 24-1/2" and 34" wide with a vertical opening of at least 15" high. Secure, screw-mount design locks the Veranda in place. Dual side wings extend to fill the window space and create a weather-tight seal. White color blends into any décor. Pets up to 20 lbs. Limited lifetime warranty.

Taking the car out for an occational walk on a leash is a good idea.

My cat does not misbehave too often since she knows she will end up in her kennel and/or gets yelled at which usually fixes the problem.

Wow - THAT is pretty cool!

I've been paying more attention to him the last couple days, which he likes - and he has been better.

Where I used to live - there was an enclosed porch - which he liked to hang out in - but I have in the living room and bedroom huge bay windows (has a window seat even) that are open (with screen) - he likes them but they are not like the porch I guess.

That cage thing would be awesome in my kitchen window in the back of the house that overlooks a common grassy/deck area used by 5 townhouses.
