So you think you're *fast*? Outrun this.

Navy is going to have an operational railgun on board ships around 2012 or so...

Imagine how much fun it would be to fire this sucker. Imagine trying to outrun a kinetic energy projectile moving @ 7x the speed of sound. And, very little shrapnel when it hits the target.

So they have/rekon they will have solved the problem where it destroys the barrel everytime you fire it?

I read somewhere that it would theoretically cauterise the would it makes if the projectile is small enough, could be interesting.

Apparently. Most of the issue is exhaust gas rather than recoil.

And having the capacitors that can recharge to fire the thing rapidly enough for it to be a real weapon rather than something that just sits on ship and takes up space.

Well, hell, if you could accelerate a fully loaded boxcar up to a sizable %age of lightspeed you could do a pretty good job of messing up the Earth... no defense against something moving near lightspeed, either, unless you can figure out a way to communicate faster than light... say with quantum coupled communication buoys spaced out along probable lines of attack.

I thought the smallest they could make this thing was the size of a subway car.

the biggest advantage for this is the cost efficiency.
1x cruise missile $600,000
1x rail gun shot, $10,000 (random guess) and not as easy to track and destroy compared to the missile.

I just remember hearing that every time you fired it, you have to replace the barrel, ain't exactly good for firing speed/cost effciency

don't forget that gun barrels overheat and wear out too.
it's just that the railgun is larger and heats up much faster in this regard. much worse.

I see this more like a replacement cannon for the age old Iowa class battleship 16in/50cal main gun

it's also an interesting alternative to sabot rounds that main battle tanks use.
