A friend tells you that they 'hooked up' with someone...

What do you take that to mean?

Depends on the context.

I hook up with my pal Cody and we talk Photoshop and photography stuff.

I hook up with...well...nevermind.

Like the previous posters have said, context is important here. I am assuming the situation is some sort of sexual encounter, so I can offer the opinion that it is at least making out or anything beyond that.

They went to the Home Despot together in search of a small spoon cabinet, but were faced with nothing but lockable steel diamond-plate baby bassinets, so they went to the local Asian food mart and picked up a Civil War re-enactment uniform and a packet of daisy seeds instead.

It means they became a temporary couple and hung out together for a while. It may or may not imply any more than that.

Either you met them, as in "After the game we hooked up for some brews." (perhaps a context more common to older folks). Or you engaged in a sexual encounter, as in "At the party I hooked up with some chick." I think this context is assumed by the younger generation.

Haha thanks for the responses! I was having this debate with my girlfriend as to what hooking up meant. I always saw it at meaning you went home with someone and pretty much did everything whereas she uses the term to mean a make-out session. Maybe it is partly a regional thing or she could be a lot more innocent than I am
