Very Expensive Day For Some Local Cyclists

There is a town called Jones just to the east of OKC. It's frequented by a lot of individual cyclists and group rides because the surrounding areas provide a number of fairly wooded and pretty flat 30 to 60 mile loops of decent country road. Good for fast rides. Well yesterday the city decided to generate some revenue and had police cars watching the two stop sign intersections. Results? Over 30 failure to come to a complete stop citations issued to cyclists. And that's just from people that are on our club chat group. Who knows how many others we don't communicate with. And then there's cars that were also cited. Jones made a bundle yesterday.

Oops, forgot. Citations were 173 bucks each.

Sounds like the local government sent out their Thug and Goon squad. I'm sorry to hear this man.

Your club needs to form a text warning network.

Don't think of them as stop signs....think of them as a place to wipe the sweat off your glasses and suck down some GU --- which might just lead to your stopping by them, but that's just a coincidence.

When i'm in the city i stop at lights. When i'm out in the country (most of the time) i roll stop signs....i slow down but if nobody is coming, whats the point?

Sounds like the town just wanted some cheap revenue.

There was little town near here that targeted everyone. The state finally pulled their charter and shut them down.

Meh. The easy way to avoid problems is to obey the law, at least when the cops are watching. In our town, the cops will pull anyone over for minor infractions -- I tell visitors to be sure they obey the laws. I've been pulled over a number of times for all kinds of things, most recently a headlight that had gone out that night. I've never actually received a ticket yet.

Nah, just practical. If I see a cop sitting by the side of the road, I figure he probably doesn't have any pressing business to attend to. I'd rather someone other than me broke up the monotony of his day, so I avoid doing anything that would attract his attention. And yes, I have been pulled over on a bike a few times too...

Saw the same thing on Long Beach Island NJ this week. We stopped. The guy we had been riding with did not. We saw him yelling at the cop who had written him the ticket on the way back. It was pretty funny.

Camera tickets are always cheaper.... they fall under a different class in the houston area.

Stinks, but they were breaking the law. I'm guilty of it also, but understand just the same.

Just wondering.... What if you don't carry an ID with you on your bike? How do they know the name you give is your real one? Do they haul you in if you have an ID?
