Came back to work from paternity leave to "changes"

Namely, they want me to manage a different team; one that is in the crapper and needs saving. I was told my performance managing my current team is not in question, but rather it's that performance that makes me the right candidate.

This sends a little bit of fear down my spine. Move me to a failing team? What if I don't turn them around? Did I underperform in some way?

oh the nerves.

Ooh...that sucks. Sorry man.

Hopefully they're doing it because they think you're so good that you are the only one who CAN turn them around. Quickly identify help if the team needs it.

Nothing like coming back to a hell pit. Sucks to be dumped in to a failing team....been there before. Leading must be even worse.

My colleague and good freind has been asked to manage another team (which he's accepted). It's not a failing team but certainly one that could do with a little booster. I think he's the right guy for the job. Maybe you've been picked with similar aspirations.

Take it at face value, and show your commitment. Do it twice and you will be the go-to guy when they want a bigger problem solving. Never run from a challenge, and pedal twice as hard to work off your frustrations

I've only spoken to my immediate manager so far, I still need to talk to my Director, who has all the "real" skinny on the move(s). I (mostly) trust that the story of me being the right choice is true, it's just awkward to come back after two weeks to my boss wanting to change things. The timing, y'know?

My previous supervisor was given a similar assignment. Her work was so good with the current team that she was placed in charge of a larger, less successful team so she could haul them out of the mudpit they'd dug themselves.

Remember: You're not being punished. You're being presented with an opportunity to showcase your exemplary leadership abilities.
(A cheap suit and a spiral-bound publication from Kinko's and I'm ready for my own empowerment seminar!)

First off HELLO superdex, second off, yes that sucks, talk to your director and be real frank and ask her/him their reasoning.

Lastly paternity leave. CONGRATS Daddy.
