Know a good hotel in NYC?

In Oct, my wife and I will be spending a couple days in NYC. However, the rates we've been seeing are sky high. Anyone have a favorite hotel that's decent and hopefully not too hard on the wallet? Thanks

Stay at the Extended Stay in Secaucus NJ. There is a very nice bus that stops about a block down from the hotel that will take you right to Union Station. You can get anywhere in NYC from there.

Worked great for us.

If you don't mind staying in Brooklyn, I stayed at the NuHotel. It is a 5min subway ride from Manhattan. Nice place, quiet, safe neighborhood.

I stayed at the Skyline at on 49th st at 10th ave recently.... it's about $200/night and they have $10/day valet parking. It's not a 4 star by any means, but it seemed clean and it's very close to a lot of stuff.

have only stayed in a hotel in NYC once, at the chelsea 20+ years ago.

this one is a tried and true budget hotel in a fantastic location.

if your intent is to make the most of the city, and only use the hotel to crash, it should serve your purpose.

Not sure how the prices compare to staying in Manhattan, but also check out Long Island City in Queens; there were a few new huge hotels on 29th street (one is a Holiday Inn) and thereabouts just built. As RUOkie said you are a few fast subway stops from Grand Central Station on the 7 train, or you could just walk or ride over the 59th street bridge, which will provide some nice photo ops

Here is one while riding home the other night:

That's facing north; if you turned around you'd see the Manhattan skyline... there are lots of nice spots in Brooklyn and Queens to really take in the view of the city from across the water.

I would recommend the Park Central Hotel. We stayed there last Feb and the place was great. Clean, good location between Central Park and Times Square, on 57th. Just across from Carnegie Hall. It was about $150/nt. after taxes.

The Market Diner on 11th ave at 43rd has unbelievably good hash browns...
