Not sure how the prices compare to staying in Manhattan, but also check out Long Island City in Queens; there were a few new huge hotels on 29th street (one is a Holiday Inn) and thereabouts just built. As RUOkie said you are a few fast subway stops from Grand Central Station on the 7 train
, or you could just walk or ride over the 59th street bridge, which will provide some nice photo ops

That's facing north; if you turned around you'd see the Manhattan skyline... there are lots of nice spots in Brooklyn and Queens to really take in the view of the city from across the water.
