Microsoft sucks. Hard.

I use their Office software on my Mac. It often blows. Their tech support sucks too. They're hard to reach. They're expensive. Their program is a cluster fark. For more reasons than I care to enumerate here.

It's brutal. They're brutal. How the F you Windows Weenies deal with their considerable mammoth software company bull**** is beyond me. I deal with Apple on issues from time to time. MUCH easier. Of course those issues are few and far between compared to the Microsoft issues. And when I do contact the company the tech support is 10x better. I have an office network with six Macs here. We used to have a Windows PC. We threw in the towel. It was too much of a pain in the ass. It's sitting in the crawlspace collecting dust.

I just tossed my old Entourage (MS Office email program) database on my laptop because it was hopelessly corrupt. Couldn't rebuild it. I think it's an incompatibility with the new Mac System 10.6, which I suppose is sort of to be expected. I just started over. I have the main database on my desktop.

I generally like MS Office for the most part. But Microsoft is the absolute worst. Do they go out of their way to alienate their customers? It has gotten to the point where it's easier to do anything but call them. So I try to avoid it.

Just sayin'.

Adobe is almost as bad. I've been using their software for 20 years, and daily in my business for 18. It gets worse with every upgrade. I don't know how you do that. That's impressive.

I won't call them either. That is almost as big a waste of time as calling Microsoft.

Almost.

I can't decide what's worse between Apple shills and the Ron Paul people.

Look kid, I've been working with this crap for a couple of decades. Companies like Adobe and Microsoft get pretty friggin old. Apple isn't flawless (my latest incident with my laptop repair underscores that) but they're FAR easier to deal with than just about any other hardware or software company.

Hey, look at the consumer satisfaction scores. Apple crushes everybody else. You don't do that by pissing off more customers than you make happy. But in my experience nobody is quite as useless as Microsoft. Hey, wtf, they thought Windows Vista was a good idea.

Let that be your guide.

Oh by the way, a few notes about Apple tech support:

• They were planning an Indian call center a few years back. Had the property picked out and the contracts signed. Apple decided the hit customer satisfaction would take wasn't worth it. The scuttled the plan.

• They had an Indian firm simply directing calls to their North American tech support (you would eventually talk to a tech support agent usually located in Canada) a couple of years back to save a little money. The customer feedback was so negative on even hearing an Indian accent on the phone (more a reflection of negative experience with other companies than any anti-India bias in my view) they pulled the plug on that too.

• Apple does outsource its tech support - to places like Eastern Canada where you get a North American that is very similar to an American tech support rep.

Apple's big advantage in this area is that they control the horizontal and the vertical - they make the hardware and the OS. Few third parties. Much easier to control and provide coherent tech support under that scenario. A major reason why paying a premium for Apple computers delivers some advantages.

It is ironic, but the open nature of the Windows/PC environment that is arguably its greatest strength is also its Achilles Heel - it can become a Tower of Babel for tech support. But that really doesn't explain why Microsoft is so hard to deal with. They just suck.

The straw that broke the camel's back for me was having my 3 day-old Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death, and then trying to get Microsoft to do something as simple as e-mail me a shipping label. I took the thing back to the retailer after calling them 5 times in a week and swore that that was my last Microsoft product.

Oh well. I guess we're all stuck with Microsoft.

Just like BF is stuck with Pcad.

Tech support for Office? Don't waste your time and money trying to get tech support. Nobody gives decent tech support for a dumb $300 application. Next time you're flummoxed, just use The Google (as you old fogeys call it). I guarantee that somebody else has had & solved the same problem you have.

Tech support for Office? Here's your tech support for office:

Adobe is right there too. I once told them that if they didn't transfer our floating Framemaker licenses from Unix based to host locked PC based (oh, and there is a concession already), we wouldn't user their software anymore. And we haven't.

I've had to support and work with them all, Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Sony, etc. They all suck. I went open source about 6 years ago and have had much fewer problems and the times I do have a question I can usually go post on a forum or mailing list and get an answer pretty quick. It amazes me that a company as big as Microsoft or Apple can employ so many people and charge so much money yet can't match an open source product thats free.

Lets set this straight...

Mac = overpriced yuppie computers. I surely wouldnt pay MY hard earned money for them.

PC = Yea, you could run windows. I have WinXP and it runs stable and has for 2 years or so. NEVER a lock up. Then again, I built my computer, with good components.

Linux = Awesome. I wish I had the time to run it again and figure it all out. I used it for 3 months in college and it was just plain the best OS. No damn locking up, No money.

I personally use open office. Its free and just as good.

What kinds of problems do you have with Office that you need tech support? I've had a couple nuisances, but they were fixed with some updates recently.

I've never called Adobe, but acrobat is bloated and non-intuitive beyond belief, and getting worse.

With all due respect pcad, Apple computers are really designed for the type of person who needs tech support with office.

I work with a few of them.

Microsoft is a disaster over the last few years. Vista was an abomination and Office 2007 changed the way you did everything in the applications without providing any new functionality or benefit. I have been using Office since before they bundled the apps into office, I knew exactly where every menu item and command was in the menu system. They come out with 2007 and nothing is where it has been for the last 15 years. Whose great idea was that?

The brutally honest reason behind consumer satisfaction scores is: Macs are for technologically incompetent people, they're made idiot-proof so that the user, despite how incompetent they are, can't destroy the file systems. PCs file systems on the other hand are hardly protected and can easily be corrupted by the user by making any number of stupid mistakes.
