What makes you an expert?

I am intrigued by the observation that students taking courses suddenly believe that they are experts in a field. What do you think causes the sudden "I must exert my expertise" need? I am not in any way suggesting that I am an expert. Just observing and questioning why it is that this happens. Also, this is not limited to simply students taking classes, but most people who learn something new seem to feel the need to show of their new found knowledge.

Discuss.

In my humble opinion, I put it down to a healthy ego. Right or wrong, that's my opinion.

teaching someone what you've learnt is the greatest test in understanding the subject yourself.

Let's see, a Master's Degree and 22+ years of doing the same crap over and over. I think that makes me an expert.

I would agree that an advanced degree and 22 years of experience certainly makes you an expert. Why do students in an introductory class for a BA degree think they are suddenly experts?

Studies have shown this to be true. So you think that perhaps the students are testing whether they truly understand the concepts?

A disproportionate amount of new Engineers starting their careers at the company I work for, have an overly cocky attitude, believe they know it all, and have a hard time taking advise from more experienced Engineers. I'm not sure if it's today's youth brought up in a different environment, or if I'm just getting older and less tolerant of youth. Not sure.

Because they are spoiled and their parents have probably paid for everything up to this point, they probably got SAT coaching paid for and the worst that's happened in their lives is they had a fender bender or lost an acrylic nail growing up.

Their parents have been TELLING them they are experts for years in an effort to 'boost their self-esteem'. Instead, you end up with brats. End of story.

Flunk 'em ALL.

I find it sad that we do not embrace the expertise of more experienced individuals. Certainly enthusiasm and creativity lead to innovation, but there is something to be said for quality and continuity as well.

that and maybe some just want an ego boost... 'hey look, I'm better educated than you, fear my new found knowledge'

or maybe it's something like getting new super powers and going on a power trip.

Nicely put. Our new Engineers tend to challenge previous assumptions, which drives innovation. However the more successful Engineers are the ones that mentor under a more experienced individual.

I don't doubt that you are an expert, MV.

My question relates to people who have just learned a new skill or concept. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you are just learning your skill. It is my understanding that it is well practiced and has been perfected to the point of perversion.

We see this in the education field as well. The truly great teachers embrace that mentoring relationship and collaboration, sharing ideas and creativity to be innovative in the classroom.

So, why, if we know this to be true, do students not temper their enthusiasm a bit more? Defer to the real experts in their field and learn as much as possible while still questioning and creating and innovating.

I don't think it's you at all. You are probably experiencing a sense of entitlement among many of today's younger people, particularly those in college or newly graduated. I see this in some of the courses I teach - students who have a hard time dealing with an authority figure (i.e. a professor or a supervisor). There are things students attempt to say to me or some of my colleagues that none of us would have ever dreamt of saying back when we were their age. Not all of them are like this mind you, but there are enough that it's definitely noticeable in the classroom. If the buck doesn't stop somewhere then these students will carry that sense of entitlement into the workplace.

Did you read the post or just reply to the thread title? And yes, I'd say 18 years in your business qualifies you as expert.
