    Flu jabs + h1n1

Who normally gets the flu jab?
Who's gonna get the flu jab this year for the first time?
Who's gonna get the h1n1 flu jab when available (UK has it available now for high-risk patients)?
Who thinks the h1n1 vaccine has been r&d'd sufficiently?

I've never got a flu jab but after getting that nasty flu from last year, I thought I'd get one this year, at least to protect those around me from catching anything that I get - I figure at least I'd be doing my part. What are you guys doing?

My friend in USAF gets the jab mandatorily.

EDIT: how long/thick is the needle for normal jab and for h1n1 jab?

I always mean to but then don't, but I really don't get sick much anyway. When I do get sick, it's usually those heinous stomach viruses that the flu shot doesn't protect against.

I always get the flu shot.
Not real sure I'll bother with H1N1. Theoretically, my immune system should already have some antibodies ready, so if I did get the H1N1 flu, it shouldn't be as bad as if I did nothing.

Incorrect. H1N1 uses a unique protein bonding that is completely different to how the seasonal flu bonds to your cells. This is also the reason it requires a completely different vaccine to the seasonal flu. As you shold realize from my wife and her situation, it can get very, very, very nasty.

I understand....I'm going by what the guy that gave me the seasonal shot last weekend said. It won't provide immunity, but the immune system will be primed already, such that the infection "might be less severe".
Besides, there's not H1N1 vaccine available to me at the moment.

And I'm glad your wife is doing better. Are you doing ok?

I have never gotten a flu shot and I have not had the flu for the last 10 years. I prefer to make sure I wash my hands frequently and try to keep them away from my face. I also don't generally get colds, I hate being sick.

Yes, I am. I'm doing fine, myself. Just a bit behind on things for class, etc.

Working in healthcare as I do, I get the seasonal flu vaccination every year, and I will get the H1N1 when it is available.

Work in a hospital. Already got the normal one. Still waiting to get H1N1.

Didn't use to when I was younger. Got really sick a few years ago and have gotten them every year since then. I don't know if they kept me from getting the flu, but it obviously hasn't hurt.

I wash my hands constantly and use hand sanitizer in between washing. I think this helps too.

I don't need the H1N1 vaccine. I've already been infected by the virus, put me out for close on 2 weeks, though wasn't any worse than a regular seasonal flu. It went through my entire family. My son had it worst, but still not as bad as Tom's bride.

Probably won't get the seasonal one.

For the first time ever - I got a flu shot this year. And will most likely get the other one too when offered. I work at a college which is in the center of downtown - which is also located in the poorest area of the city (within a 2 mile radious) and the people I am around all the time are always hacking and sneezing and wheezing and making all sorts of other bodily noises that just sound like sickness. I am constantly cleaning off my counter with clorox wipes from the students who come in here and cough or sneeze on me. I swear some of the people coughing down the hallway have TB or something - no one seems to stay home!

    So yeah, I'm getting it.

<edit> BLARG! some guy just sneeezed twice - over the drinking fountains I use.

    nice

Never gotton a flu shot, and I won't get it unless my job completely depends on it. Besides. I haven't gotten the flu since I was, like, 6.

If I keel over from H1N1 I'm leaving my body to Foo. Just shove it in the corner somewhere with the rest of the banned Foosters.

I used to but then I stopped, now I'm thinking about it for myself and the kids. It's actually 3 shots I think, 1 for the flu, and 2 separate for h1n1, and the regular has to be 28 days apart from h1n1? Something too convoluted to get me to call back for an explanation. We are all washing our hands a lot for sure.

    Nope, nope & nope.

You can get them at the same time - one in each arm. You only need two shots for the H1N1 if you are between the ages of 6months to 9 years, otherwise, one is enough.

2 of the 3 of us who would be getting the shots are in that age range.

Got the regular flu shot last week - get it every year. I doubt I'll get an H1N1 because I'm not in a high risk group.

I get one every year. My 5 year old has had his. I have not had mine, but will get one soon, as will my 8 year old and my wife. You will all know when my 8 year old gets his, as you will hear his unearthly screaming as a nurse and I hold him down while a second nurse injects him. If you do not hear the screaming, it means that he got the nasal flu vaccine and all is well.
