Would anyone ever go to Africa?

I understand it's pretty boring there.

http://www.bikeforums.net/africa/

Maybe we should have the Foosters invade Africa.

Not with the rash of rich people who've been dying over there.

Africa can't be all that boring. All of those Nigerians keep getting money from unsuspecting Americans and they have to do SOMETHING with it...

You mean I am not the only one waiting for my share of a rich person's wealth.

I already wired my money and my account information... but I haven't heard back in over a month.

Do you think that maybe the barrister is dead now?

It's not boring I suspect. I've thought about it. A friend some years ago tried to prevail upon me to accompany him to Liberia to visit his folks, different now though.

I would choose a different part. Maybe more southerly, Durbin maybe. I would however enlist the advise of those living there prior to going, pertaining to remedies or precautions, natural home brew stuff. The thought of parasites scares me, though I fear no man.

With the number of non-profits sending bikes into sub-Saharan Africa (Rwanda Bike, etc.), we know they have the bikes. They may however have a distinct lack of Internet access and English language skills.

having lived in South Africa for 5 years ( Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg) I'd go back, but with
a caveat or two. The crime rate was very high, and unfortunately most crimes there are violent.
Unless that has changed I'd be leery of a move back, and would be very selective of where I lived.
I really liked Namibia and Mocambique both are gorgeous countries, Namibia gets much less
press and is in overall better shape of the two. As my other passion is scuba diving I'd prefer to live
on the east coast, the Indian Ocean it's warmer and calmer than the Atlantic.
South African Bicyclist joke: What do you call a bike rider in Mali Mali (part of the Kruger national park)?
Answer: Meals on Wheels.
And that is the other caveat, road riding was very dangerous there, I'd have to think long and
hard about moving to a place where cyclists get even less respect than they do in the
worst parts of the U.S.

I wouldn't want to travel anyplace that my chances of getting murdered are high, I get enough of that here in the U.S.

I would really love to go back. Mom just got a better isp and can now use Skype, so we video chatted for the first time last month.

I think it is a case of not chatting on a North American board and only on local ones for those who are inclined to chat on a board in the first place. Internet access is not as widespread there as it is over here because it is expensive.

And you don't need many for South Africa anyways. Very beautiful country. But as has been said before, the drivers are mad.

Unless it was for Anthropological or Archaeological reasons, non.

However, somewhere with white sandy beaches, half naked hot guys carrying drinks and clear warm waters? Hell yes, book me a flight!

I lived is South Africa for two years. I loved it. Great people, wine, steaks, sushi, clothing optional beeches with only the hottest people naked, fern boss, tiny pineapples, mangos. I lived in Cape Town, and the Eastern Cape. I had many good experiences and very few bad ones. Made it to Zimbabwe and saw Victoria Falls,

Bike riding did suck-- too many drunks; too narrow roads, wide double beer trucks, many vehicles in bad repair, not much speed enforcement all helped to make it a bad bike experience. I only rode in Cape Town and around Grahams town. I can see why that sub forum does not see much action.

I'd say go to SA if you don’t want to learn any languages, and you like to drink, and eat great steak. Also you need to stay at least a month. Wacky suggestion-- ship a Harley in ahead of you and trade it for Kruger ands and biltong when you leave.
